ps3 9.04 install on sdtv

Hi, I am trying to install xubuntu 9.04 on my ps3 and have an sdtv. I downloaded the standard iso file for ps3, did the necessary "other os" setup to the ps3, get the initial kboot prompt, but cannot get past the black screen of death after that. I have tried multiple video settings (e.g., install video=ps3fb:mode:1, etc), but can never get anything to appear after the initial boot screen. My nephew has also encountered this same problem and is stuck at the same spot as I am.

I have seen variants of this thread, but have not seen a solution. Has anyone else encountered this problem? How did you solve it?

Edit: This is now working!! I had to use the "alternate" installer and worked perfectly out of the box.
