View Full Version : What do you think you would be doing now if computers were never invented?

As title says. :D

For me, I'd hope I would have been able to do something music related, like composition or be a session musician. Even better would be to be able to play in an orchestra professionally.

In reality it's quite likely I would have become a musical instrument maker, like my dad, taking over his business as it were. If neither of those, then I'm not too sure which direction I would've gone in.

Music or film production might be areas I'd consider.

...Something like that:
"Neolithic peoples were skilled farmers, manufacturing a range of tools necessary for the tending, harvesting and processing of crops (such as sickle (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sickle) blades and grinding stones (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grinding_stone)) and food production (e.g. pottery (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pottery), bone implements). They were also skilled manufacturers of a range of other types of stone tools and ornaments, including projectile points (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Projectile_point), beads (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bead), and statuettes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Statuette). But what allowed forest clearance on a large scale was the polished stone axe (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stone_axe) above all other tools. Together with the adze (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Adze), fashioning wood for shelter, structures and canoes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canoe) for example, this enabled them to exploit their newly won farmland."
(Wiki source. :) )

I'd study - which is what I should be doing right now.

sigh :(

Yay, yet another "let's rewrite history" thread...

I have no clue.

Abusing the power at be in some other format instead of the mods on the UF, was it wrong to say that?

Inventing a machine which can manipulate data according to a set of instructions.

Film is probably something else I wouldn't mind doing as well. It'd probably be particularly interesting with a more hands-on approach using film instead of computers.

Grammatically, yes.

Grammatically, yes.

Wow thats my biggest weakness among others, glad to see you still doing what the mods do, and all for free.

Yay, yet another "let's rewrite history" thread...

I have no clue.

Hypothetical questions can hardly rewrite history.

EXAMPLE: If the question was phrased; " What do you think you would be doing now if you had not received the ultimate privilege of being a member of the forum staff", could not very likely change the fact that you have been granted that privilege.

This is in no way intended to be a slight.

I'm there right now :D Good times :)

I would still be on the radio, saying shenanigans-filled things and what-have-you.

I would probably be working on some kind of flying machine, which would eventually lead me to Rockets, which in turn would reveal the need for some sort of computer system. Computers would be invented, and I'd end up back here on Ubuntu Forums.

Kind of like in that novel where people go back in time to kill Hitler, but someone else ends up doing the same thing Hitler did.

I'd say that I would be trying to decode the human genome, because lord knows it wouldn't get done without computers unless everyone worked on it. :P

I would probably be whittling the ultimate weapon to even the "balance of terror".

Just kidding.

It would probably be in the realm of mechanical science.

Like several others here, I would probably be trying to invent the computer. :)

Right now I'd prolly be reading some book. I'm a student so my life would largely be unaffected (relatively) though a lot of my life still centers around computers, I'd just replace it with books and the like.

Not much since computers run television and everything basically... So maybe reading a book or some lame crap like that... Computers run more than just personal computers unless you meant in a weird way what would you be doing if there were no personal computers like we have today but still some sort of computers that magically ran the electric company and such... ha :P dunno just ranting...

I would be displaying aggressive behavior on a battlefield with a AK47 in my hand and my broadsword on my back. Dang that sounds charming!

I would be working on the field trying to get enough grain to pay me king's taxes. Then I would go to the village and see if I can trade by chicken for a bull which I later can work with on the field.

When i try to imagine such a world I weep uncontrollably. I'd like to think I'd be a musician of some sort but, probably something less wonderful like staring at things or lifting things.

Being productive on my schoolwork.

But, that said, without computers, my field of study would probably be entirely different. Spreadsheet and database software are the core of modern Economics. If you can't examine data that is coming in constantly, you can't make relevent assessments or compute formulas in a suitable amount of time.

Hey guys, you think Twitter would be as popular if it involved a bunch of men on horses delivering short messages back and forth from one side of the world to the next?

Warpnow Twitters: Hey, I just got a new shirt!
*five years later*
Man in China: Hahaha, Warpnow got a new shirt!!!

I'd be begging Bill Gates to adopt me and at the same time planning this company called International Business Machines.

Kicking a ball in the street with my mate Steve Jobs.

Reading another Jules Verne book.
