View Full Version : [ubuntu] GRUB loading. 4ever.

OK, so I started with the following dual-boot config:
1.) 2 hard drives (sda and sdb).
2.) windows xp on sda
3.) ubuntu 9.04 on sdb
4.) GRUB as a boot loader in MBR of hd0

this worked fine and dandy. All I did is install 9.10 over sdb using the RC LiveCD, and now I can't boot anything. Thanks GRUB2! It gets through the bios post stuff and then says "GRUB loading." and nothing happens. Any advice? All I could find seemed to be outdated. Already tried reinstalling.

Advice appreciated. I miss old grub.

Let's get a better look at your setup & boot process. Boot the Ubuntu Live CD/USB. Choose "try ubuntu without any changes", when the desktop loads come back here and use the link in my signature to download the Boot Info Script 0.32 to the desktop. Once on desktop open a terminal and run this command
sudo bash ~/Desktop/boot_info_script*.sh This will create a RESULTS.txt file on the desktop. Paste the entire contents of that file back here. Once pasted highlight all text and click the # sign on the toolbar to place code tags around the text.

OK, here we go (thanks for the quick response, btw). As you see below I have sdb divvied up into /, /home, and swap; sda contains the dell utility partition in addition to windows xp...None of this was a problem with Jaunty.

you do not have GRUB installed to the MBR of either disk. I am not familiar with GRUB 2 which is what 9.10 uses. There is a forum for 9.10. Maybe you can get help there to install GRUB 2 to MBR. Unfortunately I am not familiar with GRUB 2 and it's commands yet.

But that is why your machine is not booting. You need to put GRUB on MBR. I would put it on MBR of sdb then set sdb as first boot in hard disk boot order in BIOS. This will bring up GRUB when you boot.

P.S. what happened to the windows bootloader on sda?

Thanks, I reinstalled and selected /dev/sdb instead of the default. It seems to be working now if I tell the BIOS to boot from SDB, and even detects XP (although I haven't tested that it boots OK yet). I don't understand why the default selection did not install it into the MBR of sda, since that is what it did when I installed 9.04...Anyways, thanks for pointing me to the solution.

you should be good to go now, I would go into BIOS and set sdb as first in the hard disk boot order that way you don't have to keep going into BIOS at boot.

If you have problems with windows post back.
