I've had Ubuntu for a while, and for a while it hasnt been updating because of errors. i have no idea how to get this to work

when i try it offers to do a partial update. and i get this

The package 'linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic' is in an inconsistent state and needs to be reinstalled, but no archive can be found for it. Do you want to remove this package now to continue?

and then i tried to remove the package to continue and i got this

The package 'linux-image-2.6.27-11-generic' is in an inconsistent state and needs to be reinstalled, but no archive can be found for it. Please reinstall the package manually or remove it from the system.

help would be greatly appreciated.

Go to System-->Administration-->Synaptic Package Manager-->Edit-->Fix broken packages, and remove the broken package.
