View Full Version : [SOLVED] Brand new external HDD - "Error Loading OS" on Start-up

The internal hard drive on my laptop was failing, so I bought a Cirago 320 GB external hard drive (link (http://http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822242009)). Then I went to the boot menu and set it as the default drive, and installed Ubuntu 9.10 64 bit version with the self-download CD. It installed smoothly, and no error messages.

But when I rebooted the computer to complete the installation, I simply got the message "Error Loading OS" and nothing loaded. What am I missing here? Are there any other steps I need to do?

My computer is a Toshiba Satellite M305D-S4830. The external drive is brand new, and when Ubuntu is run from the CD it doesn't show any problems for it like it does for my old internal drive

Tell me what other info you need from me to help me get this up and running if you can.

Thank you all in advance for any help or advice.

During the last step of the installation, did you go into "Advanced" and instruct GRUB to install to the external HDD?

+1, what i was going to ask.

if the answer is no, then you will need to install GRUB onto the external hard drive.

now that you are hopefully pointed in the right direction... if the various how-to guides and whatnot that google will give you are not helpful for some reason, post back and we can help you.

good luck!
