Hey guys and gals,

My lovely wife, who has been using ubuntu for over a year has decided that we need a new washing machine. She entered the contest of a Belgian magazine so we can win one.

Vote for Cheyenne's design and she might win her lovely linux washing machine! Click on the link below then on STEM (=VOTE), put in your mail address, you'll then get a mail and you have to click on the link to confirm your vote! You don't have to be afraid that you will get spam afterwards, because Belgian law prohibits this. You have to give explicit permission before they can send you commercial email (we have an opt-in policy as opposed to the USA's opt-out policy).

We just got married and can really use it, besides, how cool is it to have a linux washing machine...

Check it out, i'll bet you'll find it cute:

http://www.washinstyle.be/index.html?did=150

Thanks a bunch :)

Edit: The competition ends the 15th of November at 0:00 hours ECT (European Central Time, which equals GMT+1), so you can still vote until the 14th of November at midnight.

Hehe. Love your post.

If you follow this link: http://www.washinstyle.be/index.html?did=150

There's a box below my wife's design saying Stem voor deze creatie (=Vote for this creation). Below it is a button Stem (=vote), click it. Then you'll need to validate your vote by filling in your email address in the form that pops up, next click "Bevestig" (=confirm). They'll send you a confirmation mail with a link. Click the link and you're done.

We currently have 19 votes, but the top person already has 136 (you can see this by clicking on the design and below the name of the person it says "stemmen" and a number, that's the number of votes.) The linux community can easily beat that though!

Thanks for voting!

Ugh, flash.

19 against 136? That's going to be tough to beat in this forum. Especially when you need to "confirm" your email address when LG could just record your IP address -_-

my_key
October 22nd, 2009, 01:48 PM
Yeah, I know. But in Belgium everybody has a dynamic IP (unless you specifically pay way to much to have a fixed one) so that would be way to easy to cheat. You just write a cronjob to vote, refresh connection, vote, refresh... Thats why they ask an email confirmation.

After some slight pressure to get my own account on this forum :)

thanks for voting everyone, it makes us happy. (4th place already)

you should have seen the surprise on my husband's face when he saw the penguin design I had made for the washing machine.

he thought it was hilarious and a good choice, being the linux fan that he is.

take a look at the penguins and have a laugh :)

wouldn't you want to have a machine like that at your place?

Personally I think LG products are junk. LG does not stand for "Life's Good". It stands for the merger of two companies (Lucky & Goldstar, which were also junk)

Regardless of how I feel, I voted anyway :)

Even junk can be good if it's free

Pffft - I built my own washing machine and ran it using Visual Basic.

The software was affectionately nicknamed "Winwash 2000"

I used PIC Microcontrollers for the motor and valve control and an RS232 link between the machine and the computer for downloading the wash program.

Only problem was that the wife couldn't work out how to use it and went out and bought a new machine.

Real men build their own washing machines ;)

Sigh. I just noticed. It was bound to happen and I think it's going to happen again and again (unless we really crush them with maybe 100+ votes). The difference between us was a bit too small for our adversaries to have given up just yet.

The deadline is November 15th at 0:00h ECT (European Central Time = GMT+1). So basically November 14th (till midnight) is the last day you can vote.

So if you haven't yet, please do. And if you have, get your friends to do it :)

Spamgourmet (http://spamgourmet.com) for the win.

I voted 17 times. With Spamgourmet and a G15, in 5 minutes, with the same email address. Giggity.

EDIT: Depending on the time you take, you could vote as many times as you like with the same email address.

EDIT2: Recieved 3 more emails, up to 20 now. There should be 6 more coming from me. I might set up the macro again so I can add another 26 easily.

We appreciate the effort, but the best might be not to cheat though, because I know of people who've been disqualified from Belgian contests for writing scripts like that. They do IP and other checks to try to ensure the contest is honest. I'm an avid user of spamgourmet myself, so I can see that you love it as well.

But so far we've been able to beat the others by just mobilizing our friends, families, their friends and family and the wonderful linux community. Please don't make their efforts go to waste.

This is not personal obviously. We appreciate the effort.

My wife and I's first apartment was gas heat. Someone broke into our house, ruined the door. The landlord wouldn't replace it, so we had to keep the heat off so that we wouldn't be wasting money. We spent two weeks in the bedroom, with it blocked off by a thick comforter nailed to the doorway. With an electric space heater runnng constantly, we played our sega dreamcast to death (literally!)

It's not really anything to do with Linux at all, is it. It's a washing machine.

why isn't that anything to do with Linux if it runs Linux? I suppose it does run Linux? If it doesn't then it isn't a Linux washing machine, it's a washing machine saying Linux on it.

Like this:
[ COLOR = "Magenta" ][ URL = "http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1297857" ]A vote, help them[ /URL ][ /COLOR ]
(remove all spaces)

But you can do it automatically: first select the text (A vote, help them) then click on this http://ubuntuforums.org/images/editor/createlink.gif then put the link in the box. Then to add colours, select the sentence again, click http://ubuntuforums.org/images/editor/color.gif and choose the colour.

This has nothing to do with 9.10 ... but.... It's a little thing to raise awareness of ubuntu & linux in general.
So, pop onto the guys thread & do vote.

Quote:

It's a bit of fun, but... the linux community is about fun http://www.vpolink.com/images/smilies/laugh.gif

Thanks for all those votes everybody, we're well in first place again. We've had a bit of a busy weekend so no real time to follow up the voting and the tread (but I saw Cheyenne was pinching a few work minutes any way). We'll let you know what we've been up to recently:

We just came home from my sister's and her boyfriend's house warming party and forced a couple of people to vote (let's say they were socially obliged, but no actual violence took place :P ). The thing is that if we win the machine it's also helping my sister and her BF out in the sense that we've currently got a very old 3kg washing machine that's really to small for 3 or even 2 people full time, but it's very handy if you're students and can still bring some laundry home... they would get it if we would win the LG one, so they kindly encouraged they're friends to vote for us, since that would mean new washing machines for everybody. Thanks Stijn and Eveline!

And my dad asked 80 people in the hospital to vote. At least quite a few of them did, so thanks dad. My mum still has to ask all the people at her workplace... Come on mum, don't be shy!

I'm currently keeping a few tricks up my sleeve. I'll keep you guys posted. Everything will unwind in the last couple of days. I'm guessing that others might be on the internet long enough to know about ebay sniping, so I'm keeping some loaded rifles (and a big truck full of C4) on the side for the final days, to cover the eventuality that someone has planned a blitzkrieg attack. Linux and we won't go down without a fight!

It will be quite exciting to see the clock actually read November 15th 0:00, when the voting will be over, because then and only then we know if we've won. And If we do I hope linux can get some exposure time. We do get to give it quite a lot of exposure to our friends (who vote and ask about it), but national exposure in Belgium's biggest woman's magazine is somewhat of a different order.

This makes me uneasy. This has nothing to do with Linux at all.

The topic starter smartly appeals to our sympathy for Linux, with eventually even a picture of an attractive blonde thrown in. But the goal to which we are being lured, is completely unconnected with Linux.

It may not be to do with Linux, but it's definitely about Ubuntu... to be precise, it's about the Ubuntu Community.

This forum (Community Cafe) contains many discussions that aren't about Ubuntu, Linux, or even computing. But they're not off-topic. Community-building is important, especially in a case like the Ubuntu Community where we depend on each other so much for tech support. Morale-building is great, and this thread is about morale building. I voted for the OP's missus to win a washing machine. Why not? It's better than some Windows-user winning! ;)

Does this seriously bother you? Does everything in life have to be about Linux?

If you're upset that something non-Linux is on these forums, here is what it says right at the top of this page in the rules for the Cafe:

Almost any non-tech-support topic may be discussed here

The Cafe doesn't have to be about Linux. The only restrictions are no religion, politics, or other topics that could cause offense.

If you want to only read Linux related things, just go to the non-discussion areas of these forums.

This post makes me uneasy. You think there`s something weird about a guy that asks a community he participates in to help him win a competition.

The picture of "the attractive blonde" that was "thrown in" to "lure" us all into voting for a washing machine, yep that`s right, that most unholy of actions, voting for a washing machine; is actually a photo of the said wife, who joined these forums just to thank everybody who had voted.

I think your choice of language is a little disturbing.

In the most part, it`s a bit of fun. Help someone out while rooting for(supporting) a washing machine. Huh?! I support a football team but I`ve never supported a washing machine??!

Also, if you read the whole thread (which I wouldn`t expect anyone to do, because it`s about a washing machine) you`ll see a segment where a couple of old married guys (me, one of them), remember what it was like when you first got married and had almost nothing - a house or apartment with no furniture, appliances or anything.

To me, at least, this about a man and a woman starting on a long journey, that will have ups and downs, good times and not so good, a lot of love and a bit of fighting - hey marriage is a hell of a ride. I just want to give them a (small, insignifigant, in the grand scheme of things) hand.

But then I`m a hopelessly romantic idiot.......

......... don`t tell anyone ;)

He is not asking for your money is he? Gee, its just a silly competition, no one is being lured into anything, its quite obvious what this is about. Winning a washing machine. Why do you care if someone else wins it?

As for this not being about linux; of course this is not really about advocating free software or something, its about a WASHING MACHINE lol. But even so, the competition is organised by the most popular woman magazine here in Belgium, if it wins it will give a tiny bit of exposure. It also seems kind of unlikely the OP would have cooked up the rest, faked the entire facebook page and would actually be a Flair reader himself. its a woman magazine after all.

But if it makes you feel any better Ill buy a copy next month and verify the penguin washing machine wasnt won by a 70 year old male bachelor advocating green electricity to save the penguins, ok?

Maybe it's a good idea if we stress test the machine by organising some sort of laundry day where everybody can bring clothes to wash (no ironing though). :D

Haha...well, seeing as how I'm in Texas, USA, and Texas is about 5100 miles (8200 km) from Belgium...looks like that's going to be a bit of a problem. ;)

Of course, if you were going to iron them, it would be worth the trip...:p

Well - I organised some friends to fill up a ship with washing in Cape Town - as a community project. You better get this machine installed quickly....:p

Congratulations with your win!! This is fantastic! And you won't forget that for the rest of your lives - what a way to start your path together.

The best of Luck to you and all the blessings you can possibly handle!!

Hmmm. Cheyenne and I are doubting if the competition is really over. We've seem to have increased in votes since last night while the voting is supposed to be over "at 0:00 October 15" that's what the rules state. Maybe game leaders got mixed up an meant October 15th 24h? Because it seems to me everybody is still gaining votes.

So is the competition still on or not?

From the rules page:

De deelnemers die op respectievelijk 15 november 2009 om 0u00, 20 december 2009 om 0u00, 17 januari 2010 om 0u00, 21 februari 2010 om 0u00 en 21 maart 2010 om 0u00 de meeste stemmen heeft op zijn design wint een LG wasmachine.

Seems like they give away a washing machine every month. One would expect the votes to reset though. Perhaps they will reset them monday morning?

Petty I just bought a new machine 2 months ago or I would have given it a shot. They mention an LG gsm phone as price for those ranked 2 to 6, and I desperately need a new phone, but I cant see which one they are giving away. Is it worth it :) ?

Yes, we've won. If you read the rules it says we've won. But the site doesn't show any change, so we thought that maybe they'd mistaken 0:00 h with 24h. But even if the competition leaders made that mistake and they programmed the competition to only end in 1h and 40 min from now, then we'll still win. No difference. But since no official announcement has been made we're still a bit unsure. You never know...

But it should be allright.

Michael

If i read the rules beneath on that site:
when you click on 'Wedstrijdreglement' (http://www.washingstyle.be/pages/wedstrijdreglement.html) it says :
De actie loopt vanaf 18 oktober 2009 tot en met 21 maart 2010 om 0u00 (hierna: de actieperiode).

Yay! another linux machine is winning already. I was wondering when the first spin-off would occur ;) Now that we've let everybody know "linux" is what they need, you can direct them towards Ubuntu :D

I voted! You should have 4 votes now. To win the phone you only needed a little bit over 100 votes in our final scoring board, so it should be a piece of cake. You can easily win that by just asking all your friends and relatives to vote.

Good luck!

It's on the website! We've won the washing machine. They'll still have to send Cheyenne an email with the details though, but the site says we've won!

(see attachment for all you (non dutch/french speaking) people that find it hard to manoeuvre through the website)

We can't really believe it yet, we're still a bit gobsmacked... So I'm not really capable of saying something clever or imaginative right now. I more or less feel like one of these actresses that have just won an oscar and start crying on stage, not really knowing what to say except something like: "OMG!... I want to thank my parents, my loving [wife] (husband in their case) and all the people who've helped to make this possible". So that's just what I'll do for now. Thank you everybody for all the votes and the support. I'll kind of miss watching the daily activity in this tread.

We're kind of cooking up a way to give back a little bit to the community. I had an idea and Cheyenne said she's "not really against it" (wife-speak for "wtf? what kind of crazy idea is that?"). So I'll keep you guys posted on that as well. If you guys have any idea just let us know. And uhm, no cguy, pictures of the wife are not an option ;)

From the official rules:

The final winner will be declared at the end of the action (March 21 at 00:00): the participant having obtained the most votes during the whole action will win a "relooking" with Jani Kazaltis, as well as a shopping voucher(correct?) of 750 euros.

Sorry that we hadn't posted earlier... We've been wanting to post it earlier, since that's the least we could do. But I had a pretty busy exam period and thesis deadlines. Cheyenne also had the busiest period of the year at her work (she's a travel agent and it's early bookings... some sort of big promotion thing and she's worked mostly 7/7). So in the evenings we were a bit like zombies.

Sorry for the wait. We had not forgotten you guys.

I had initially hoped to take some pictures during the delivery, but the delivery was a single guy with a rather small car to fit the washing machine in. It so happened that I had to carry the machine upstairs with him up our rather narrow staircase. And we live on the third floor, no elevator. :D Then the machine stood there for over a week in the middle of our kitchen, they didn't install it, he said I had to contact a plumber for that. But I haven't got that good an experience with plumbers here in Brussels, and they charge heaps just for getting here, they never bring the right kit the first time around even if you tell them what they need, just so they can charge you a second time. So I opted for the DIY route, in my spare time of course... Because our plumbing - as I found out - is rather old and dodgy I had to go to the DIY store 3 times - after some frustrating clean ups - to replace parts that normally don't belong on water pipes like wrong seals and stuff (didn't really surprise me as we had been without gas for 3 weeks just before the winter because some bonehead had placed a no return valve (for a water pipe) on our gas pipe). In the end I got everything installed though, but it took a while until I could take some proper pictures (I proposed to take some a bit earlier also, but Cheyenne didn't let me take some as she was "very tired" after work. And she wanted to look her best for you guys. Don't tell her I said this ;) ).
