How can the average person "make sure to install Windows 7 a couple of days before the party" if the party is on launch day?
Anyway, I see they were politically correct by having a senior citizen and an African American in the video. But where is the Asian, Hispanic, and Native American?

That one guy is a Welshman. They just dubbed over it because of his strong accent. :)

Funny? That is depressing. Funny are these:
Crashing the Windows 7 Launch Party (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UrnsS8mPU8)
Hitler finds out about the Windows 7 party videos (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StRqmPHOKEc)
Buzz Report Special Report: Windows 7 House Party (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmC7d2hMaqk)
Activity suggestions for your Windows 7 party!
1 - Windows Malware Scrabble (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrabble)
This a Windows version of the popular board game, in which Windows malware names are used instead of dictionary words. Since there are thousands of Windows malware with cool names, your guests will have a lot of fun. Don't forget to check the most recently discovered virus (http://home.mcafee.com/VirusInfo/ThreatActivity.aspx) database before the party. Since dozens of new Windows virus are discovered and named every day, you don't want to make fool of yourself by contesting your opponent by mistake.
2 - Microsoft Monopoly (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monopoly_%28board_game%29)
The classic real estate game of buying, trading, and improving properties has dozens of popular variations. While playing, participants learn the value of investing, bargaining, and management. In the Windows 7 party version, the objective is to buy all computer shops that only sell notebooks and desktops with an over-priced pre-installed OS from Microsoft. There are no additional rules in this version of the game, so any anti-trust competition technique is allowed. This activity should start as soon as the first guest arrives, otherwise it might not be finished when your party is over.
3 - BSOD Cluedo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cluedo)
This mystery board game teaches classic problem solving, deduction, and reasoning skills as players strive to solve a gruesome desktop murder. When the game starts, your guests are presented with a Blue Screen Of Death, which gives some hints about the crime. But don't worry about spoiling the fun, because those hints are useless, so the guests will spend a lot of time trying to figure out who murder the desktop, how and where it happened. This activity will provide your guests with endless hours of enjoyment, since there are an infinite number of possible combinations that result in a Windows BSOD.
4 - Botnet Risk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Risk_%28game%29)
In this activity, your guests will be challenged become part of a giant botnet. Since it's pretty easy to do that with a Windows computer, the winner will be the one who joins a botnet with at least a million computers in each continent.
BTW, don't forget to give a free copy of your favorite Linux distro to all your guests in the way out.

he said to install windows 7 a couple of days in advance. that's good advice. i'm going on 3 and a half hours right now and i'd say it takes 4 hours total. the "upgrade" option is bad because it takes FOREVER to "transferring files, settings, and programs".
NormanFLinux
October 22nd, 2009, 09:34 PM
A Windows upgrade takes several hours to complete. Windows installation is bloatware. Linux by contrast, whatever distro you choose, takes 15 minutes for a complete installation.

Uh epic fail anyone? Granted going forward with the new chipsets it's going to be great, but I think a lot of people are going to have an unpleasant surprise.

LOL. I remember a long time ago, a buddy of mine came back from Sri-Lanka, and had along with him DVD copies of "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Terminator 3", and "Hulk". All of which had not been released in the US at the time. The DVD jacket looked like it was professionally printed, and the case looked totally legit. He bought them for $5.00 USD each.
We played one, and it was CLEARLY a Bootleg.
What we learned from that experience is that US Copyright has no bearing on ANYTHING in countries like that, especially countries where the US Movie studios don't operate.
So, depending on which Asian country you are in, you might be able to find a copy of "7" that is completely illegal. That's why Microsoft focuses your attention to the "Genuine" sticker on the outside of the packaging.
And I am getting older by the day, so what does "O.O" mean?

Well, the release version runs faster than anything else on my desktop. Pro version. But the beta also did well, so, don't know. I still use Linux on two of my boxes, no plans to change it, but I am impressed with W7 (on the desktop it's on, not tried it on my other boxes -- only have one license anyway).

Oh, I never recommend to anyone to switch from something that works for them to something else. W7 replaced XP on one of my desktops (the one I use mostly for work and gaming), but my other office desktop and my laptop stay with Ubuntu and Arch. I see no need to switch them to anything else. I mostly commented because my experience, performance-wise, with W7 has been satisfying and while I am not fond of MS, I think the OS itself is well done.

Apple has become more of a monopoly than microsoft. Though not nearly as profitable.
It said I needed Mac OS-X or better so I used windows/any. It said I needed windows or better so I used Linux/any. It said I needed Linux or better, so I asked "What is better than linux?"
Other than x86 instruction set which is more than available, at least microsoft doesn't lock their OS to a "Supposedly" microsoft manufactured set of hardware.

There is only one caveat to running linux, which is the HW vendors fault for not running an open bios (HP in particular here) and that is that Windows can run my HPa630n with a buggy bios, whilst I have a pci not pcie graphics card installed. For some odd reason, (not the bios settings as i am an expert pc user) my hpa630n has a conflict between the integrated pci graphics and an add-in pci (any make-model) graphics card. Pci express however works fine! That is all, and it is HP's fault, though it is originally a wal-mart PC, that I bout at a pawn shop.
good luck with your problems out there!

I just had a party. We watched tons of Cable TV with the hulu app and played some LAN games aftewards. And it was because we were bored, not because of Karmic. But Karmic was there. He was just 'a guest at our party'. LMFAO.
K, but really, I think that when Linus feels compelled from the depths of his humble heart to give Windows 7 some free advertising just to try and even things out for them, you're pretty much looking at another Vista.
The only difference is that, this time, with every average consumer I've consulted about it, the failure of Vista was apprehension for Windows 7, and when I let them test it out and showed them the new features, they weren't impressed. At all. And they all said, "I don't think it's worth it."
Then I showed them a transformation pack on XP, and they asked, "cool, I want that."
Then I showed them Linux, and they were like, "whoah, that's FREE!? You're kidding."
Compare and contrast and you'll see that no one really wants to use Windows. They just feel like they have to.

Opposite on my end. 7 beats Ubuntu at boot by 7 seconds (what a coincidence!)
Moral of the story: boot-time benchmarks mean moot.

Hate to say it, 7 beat Linux in popularity while it was still in Release Candidate.

1. Normal people won't need it, nor will they even think about it. Vista was around for a fair enough amount of time. There are way over enough applications that work fine on Vista. No XP mode needed.
2. VT chipsets have been out for a while now. They are literally nothing new. My desktop has supported AMD-V for the past 3 or 4 years I've had it. Moral of the story: Research your claims before you gripe about it.
So what am I saying? Good to Microsoft for actively taking advantage of VT. They're doing something that even VMWare can't seem to do right.

Straight from the horses mouth:
Microsoft tried to torpedo the success of the Japan Linux Symposium by launching their Windows 7 product that same day. They even had setup a big promotion booth across the street from the conference center.
During a break, we decided to make some fun of Microsoft and dragged Linus over there. When we arrived there, Linus was sold immediately on the product as you can see in the picture. At least that's what the sales guy thought. He obviously had no idea who he was dealing with. But in the end Linus surprisingly did not buy a copy. Wise man!
He did it for fun, not for "free advertising". Quit with the bashing already.

Me? I couldn`t give a monkeys.
The only reason I don`t use windows is that I don`t know how and can`t be bothered to learn.
Why should I pay for an operating system then have to learn how to use it when I`ve got a perfectly good one already?
Only last week I aquired a new (old one from work) computer with a perfectly good XP install on it. I nuked it with a Ubuntu server install. Not because I hate windows or have some sort of commitment to FOSS. But because I`m comfortable with linux.

There's only 6 days left for us to have a Ubuntu Launch Party!
I feel like it would look a bit more like this...

See, the DJ is running Ubuntu.
And don't forget the OSX - Kitten launch party.

Many religions encourage hatred. Keeps people together.
Are you sure? I'll rather say that followers are those who do that, not religions. There is a difference...

Hate to say it, 7 beat Linux in popularity while it was still in Release Candidate.
What, so a FREE release of the not-yet-released brand new Windows was more popular than Linux???
I mean, even I have a copy of the RC of Win 7, but I haven't installed it yet.
What is your point? Does it suck any less because it's popular?

And you couldn't see the humour in his post? You really need to get a life and stop taking yourself so seriously.

Religions don't. But people with "jaded views" of how religion works, do.

No advertising?
I wouldn't call sending out CD's, millions of emails, developer conferences, thousands of local computer dealer seminars and a hype campaign for months no advertising.

Not really, but followers did that.
The first crusade was called by Pope Urban II. Not exactly a follower, but the leader. It was a way to occupy the knights throughout Christendom (what Europe was called back then) and also increase the power of the church. In his speech in France, he went on and on about the cruelty of the "infidels" and what they did to the "beliefers", like ripping out their guts, torturing them, and so on. That railed up the masses, peasants and knights alike, and led to the gathering of the army that marched in the name of Christ. Many children among them. By the time they sacked (and devastated its population) Jerusalem in 1100 AD (give or take a few years, would need to look it up), only about a quarter of the knights and peasants were alive still. They still slaughtered the citizens of Jerusalem once the walls were breached after the siege.

I'm aware of that. But don't forget that Pope Urban II was a follower himself (at least should had been) – follower of Christ (so, not the Prophet). Acting in accordance (?) to Christ's teachings is totally different thing. Religions are often used by their leaders for achieving their own goals. But still, that has nothing to do with teachings of the religion they follow. Religion cannot be judged through their actions.
Saying that, in Linux community you'll always have those who bash Windows, but that has nothing to do with Linux itself. See the man :D (http://lh6.ggpht.com/_COt6T7Tmrok/SuBPtuBzfvI/AAAAAAAAAoo/LHskug3S_-E/s800/dsc_1576.jpg)

Nobody actaly know how popular linux is. Somebody compare in revenues, some in sold units of computers which comes with linux preinstalled, but both of that is flawed. Linux if free, so revenues comes from support which is not needed for most. And for OEM preinstalled... M$ is basicly managed to make ilegal for OEMs to sell computer without *******. So lets not go there.
1. So, why they are making XP mode if it is not needed. They fail even more if you put it that way. I think it is needed, and people will get suprised that they can run more of old Windows XP aplicatons on Wine then on W7.
2. I am not sure of what VT chipsets you are talking about, because it is about CPUs, not chipsets. VT is not supported on many Intel CPUs. Whole Pentium Dual brand (excluding E6300) have disabled VT, as well as all C2D E7200, Q8200, Q8300 and early revisions of 7300 (and by early I mean all shiped before august this year), early revs of q8400... and I just talked about 45nm partss. With 65-nm is even worse. Look for intel pages for more details. Basicly every Intel's sub-100 euro CPU does not have VT and of you do not have oportunity to pick revision, then you have to pay about 150 euros to get VT for sure. And I learned that on hard way lest year because I had to sell brand new E2220 just because lacks damn VT. On AMD side is lot better, all their CPUs have AMD-V, but Intel is smacking the OEMs just as hard as M$ does, so not a lot of people have AMD CPU.
And M$ Hyper V is nothing to compare with WMware, Virtual Box, not to mention Xen and KVM. M$ has no technology when it comes to virtualisation.
So first get your facts before starting M$ propaganda...

The VT-requiring XP compatibility mode is for legacy software that the average end user is not likely to own or ever use. Windows 7 perfectly runs all XP programs and games without the compatibility mode. Even software that pre-dates XP has not giving me any trouble. The compatibility mode is not there, nor needed, for the end user. Which is why it is not part of the versions aimed at those users.
Before you tell Fak to get his facts straight, perhaps you should do the same. But that would require an ounce of objectivity.

I myself am windows agnostic but this has go down in history as one of the worst marketing ploys ever! (this coming from a fan of 80's corporate streaming media).
So my challenge to the Ubuntu Community is to spoof this with your own "Host a Launch Party" bit, for the launch of Lucid.
I haven't seen Windows 7 yet but I assume every colour in this from shirts to balloons was chosen to fit with windows "theme".
Bits I'd like to see:
"Look they moved window controls from the right to left"
"Ha ha ha"
"Let's have fun with that"
"I like to upload photos"
"I like to redirect <nameannoyingservice> to /dev/null"
"And remember rm -r is forever!"
So turn on your webcams set your lighting check the sound and post!

I watched it. :(
The only think worse than the camera man apparently suffering from Parkinson's is the blatantly obvious continuity errors from the clock on the oven in the background.
Over the duration six minutes and fifteen seconds, the clock starts at about 4:07, rolls back to 3:50ish, jumps ahead again, and finally ends around 5:21. It really took them an hour and half to film THAT?
Please tell me Microsoft didn't actually produce this. You'd think they'd at least think to cover that clock with a piece of electrical tape.
I don't think any amount of spoofing could rival a film production that shoddy.
