Just launch synaptic package manager (its under System->Administration)

Search for vlc, then select the package to install vlc, right click and mark it for installation.

Then apply changes.

The system will find the conflicting software and sort it all out for you.

Hope that helps

I've had that happen before, so now I always use Synaptic or the terminal. It's probably some sort of dependency problem. Synaptic will tell you about it before you install it.
