I recently decided that I needed to build a media pc in my bedroom and figured I'd throw it together with the beta of 9.10 and XBMC. However after I install the nvidia drivers I am no longer able to load up the xserver so it displays on the screen correctly.

Here is some of the basic information. Let me know if you need more.

Hardware
Mobo: Asus M2N32-SLI
Memory: 2GB
Processor: AMD64 5200 (I think, I could check but I'm a lazy geek and I don't think the processor matters much for my problem)
Graphics: dual PNY Nvidia 8500GT

After installing I ran a few things to update my system. I think this is everything I ran however I was not taking notes so I might miss something from memory:
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade
apt-get install nvidia-glx-185

After this I was no longer able to get into gnome or GDM

Boot from a LiveCD and delete /etc/X11/xorg.conf then reboot. This should allow you to boot normally. Then use jockey ( System >> Administration >> Hardware Drivers) to install nvidia drivers. If it doesn't complete the driver installation and do not ask you for a reboot, then open Synaptic and verify if nvidia-185-kernel-source, nvidia-185-libvdpau, nvidia-185-modaliases, nvidia-kernel-common and xserver-xorg-video-nv are installed. If not, install them from Synaptic and reboot.

Great, I'll check that out and let you know what happens shortly

Edit: deleting xorg.conf didn't help. It kept doing the same thing. Since I have not done anything else to the system yet I am going to reinstall ubuntu and and do the second part of your suggestion (using jockey and checking synaptic). I'll let you know how it goes.

Edit:Edit: Well even after following what you recommended the system was still doing the flashing screen. So I shutdown and removed one of the video cards and rebooted and now everything is fine. Since this is not a machine that is a gaming machine or anything intensive like that I am just going to keep the second videocard out. Thanks for you help lovinglinux.
