Hi guys Before now I was a wordpress.com blogger and my (now old blog) http://www.bigbrovar.wordpress.com but with time I found wordpress.com to be very limited (in the area of themes and plugins you can use) so I decided setup to host my own instance of wordpress. After all the work I have put in its till not complete, but I want to share it here so that you guys can give me pointers (am a newbie at all this self hosting thingie) on how I can improve and if the present design and layout makes any sense. the link to the site is here http://bigbrovar.aoizora.org/

(please dont be easy on me be as hard as u can :) )

I can't tell what you've got there that you couldn't get with wordpress.com. Is it the Lastfm stuff? (yawn@lastfm)

Its not just the lastfm thingie Infact its a whole lot, Limited themes to choose from, very limited plugin support, no captcha support, like my site now i use a heavily modified theme which wordpress.com doesn't allow you to do. Its more about having more freedom to make my blog the way i want it

I would suggest these two plugins:

Super cache helps save your bandwidth: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-super-cache/

WP-SpamFree is excellent and catching spam: http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-spamfree/

Akismet is a lifesaver for that, too.

A very true notion. You have plenty of liberty by installing WP in your server than using a subdomain on wordpress.com

Love your theme BTW. What is it ?? And I would suggest you use more images in your post!

It looks better than a lot of web sites I've seen.

You could look at the list of books at http://www.456bereastreet.com/archive/categories/reviews/

One book I've got is "Blog Design Solutions" although it's a little dated now. I've made my web site using TextPattern and I've got a blog page incorporated into that.

You could look at http://www.problogger.net/ which is a blog about professional blogging.

Have fun
