Go the FOSS route.

1) Visit Junkyard.
2) Buy parts.
3) Compile from source.
4) ???
5) Wonder why the stereo doesn't operate properly.

I'd pick NONE the OP listed. VWs, and Hyundai(s) consistently have the WORST amount of maintenance over the life of the car. There was an NYTimes article on this a year ago. Mazdas and Toyotas tended to score the best, as I recall.

The American autos are similarly "meh". My brother had a Chrysler, and now a Pontiac...both nice *looking* cars, but BOTH have/had mechanical issues bigtime.

I have a Hyundai, many of my neighbors have Hyundai's. We rarely have problems with them. Around 70,000 miles average.

2007 Dodge Caliber , 60,000 km. Has hail damage on only the roof. I was wondering if paying $8000 is worth it? The average price for a comparable model minus the hail damage is 12,000 - 13,000.

2007 Dodge Caliber sxt, 60,000 km
1.8L 5 speed
Sunroof, alloy wheels

Chrysler... yuck.

I'm not much for the VW's as I've always had problems with them. That's quite a few miles for that price.

C) 2001 Hyundai Elentra Base $3700 OBO

150,000KM 5 speed. No air conditioning.
No AC and quite a few miles. F that.

D) 2005 Chevy Aveo 5 $6000

5 speed 55,000 km
The Aveo is a Toyota in disguise. If it's in absolutely great condition that would be an okay price. The car isn't exactly going to pick up any girls though.

If you're going to own a volkswagon, own one worth having:

Aveos seem to be for sale after a couple years everywhere...I wonder why?

I'd probably pick the Dodge. Less mileage than most of the others, rather new...and not the Aveo... not sure why I'd stick clear of it, but I would. I checked craigslist recently and I saw an Aveo for sale on there for basically every car on there.

If I had to pick from the ones listed, Id go with the Hyundai - heard a lot of good things from Hyundai owners.

It's because the Aveo, like it's Toyota counterpart, is a cheap piece of crap. The car doesn't have issues or major problems, it's just very cheap. A car that takes 11 seconds to get up to 60mph (102 kph) wears on your nerves pretty fast.

The Chevy Aveo is actually a Korean Daewoo.

Whilst both of those look very nice, they are going to have serious engine issues. The 1303 has all of that chrome rubbish on the engine, it will cause seriouse running issues come winter. The red Vert has the wrong distributer fitted, it is a Bosch OO9. This will cause flat spots whilst running, increase fuel consumption and will eventually blow a hole it a piston. Out of the 3 the OP posted I'd choose the Jetta. Those VW diesel engines are bullet proof.

I'd go with the VW. Assuming that it's in good condition that engine should have a lot of miles left in it.
