Yeah a stupid question but upgrading from ubuntu 9.04 to ubuntu 9.10 alpha6 to ubuntu 9.10 final so if i upgrade to ubuntu 9.10 alpha 6 can i upgrade to the latest? once the final version comes out(the ubuntu 9.10) if i can do this can i keep the linux kernel 2.6.34.4 that i compiled or does it have to be recompiled or removed?

You don't need to reinstall to get from 9.10 non-final to 9.10-final, just keep updating.

If you haven't upgraded to 9.10 yet, why not just download the beta now and use it? Or, better yet, the RC that is due out this week? They're both in much better shape than the alpha and the upgrade to the final will require fewer changes.
