Hi.

I've found those 2 articles online which I think should be widely available to linux users.

The idea is that as people go through the process, resellers get use to it and make it easier each time.

I think it's stupid, you're harassing innocent people for no reason only to try and get a point across.

If you don't want Windows on a computer, simply don't buy it. It makes no sense to buy it and then ask for a refund on half of what you purchased because you later decided you don't want it.

It's just a waste of everybody's time and in all the tactics you people come up with to get Linux in the shops, for whatever reasons, this is by far the worst.

Very interesting, thanks. I don't buy new computers, but I can think of some people who might want to look at those before they do.

I disagree on each point.

I agree with K.Mandla's disagreeing.

The problem is that it's very difficult to buy a nice computer without Windows. What if I don't want a System76 laptop, but an HP whatever, because I like HP's hardware selection?

It is not unreasonable to want to buy a machine without an OS, but the manufacturers would have you think it is. The next best thing is to get a refund for the part that you are forced to buy bundled with the thing you do want.

And besides, you don't have to be rude to the workers with whom you speak. It's their job to be in customer service; it's not my fault if they don't like what I'm asking for.

I think this is a great oversimplification of the situation. Try buying a laptop in UK without windows and you would spend so much time and money, and the laptop will cost much more than some people wish to pay. We don't all want a top of the range machine, and therefore tend to buy a relatively low cost computer.

The lowest cost for a pre-installed linux machine I have found so far here in UK is £530, almost £200 more than I have recently paid for a Compaq C70, with a 17in screen, 2GB ram and on which everything worked, not most things, but everything, using 9.04. I didn't bother with even trying to get the license fee back from MS, but see no reason why I shouldn't have done so if I wanted to. The MS License says it can be done, (but who reads the whole license from start to finish), so they have shot themselves in the foot, to some extent.
