Hi,

I am a newbie in web admin and hosting stuff. I want to register and host a website of my own and do some LAMP stuff.

Can you guys provide any recommendations about any web registration and hosting procider from your experience ? There are tons of web registration and hosting providers, and just wanted to get feedback from folks here.

Thanks.

Godaddy and Hostgator ( tough, if you want to work with LAMP directly, you'll need a VPS or dedi ).

I personally use Register.com as my domain registrar. I also use the VPS service provided by Linode.com.

If you choose to use a VPS, I would really suggest that you do your research and find one that best meets your needs. Some VPS providers are fairly restrictive. I've used one in which I could only access the server via a poorly designed and terribly slow web-interface. I had no root access at all. On the bright side, it was only $29.99 for an entire year of service.

As I stated before, I use Linode. Linode really doesn't place many restrictions on use. As long as it's legal, they don't really care what you do. My forum is hosted on a Linode. The basic package is $19.99 a month. I have a 16 GB storage limit and a 200GB bandwidth limit. For a basic website, this is more than enough resources to accomplish your goals.

I use Gandi (http://www.gandi.net/) for domains and Linode (http://www.linode.com/index.cfm) for hosting. Both are great in my experience.

Gandi costs a little more than cheap domain registrars, but they give much better service and aren't 'shady' like some of the others are.
