i use a dell inspiron 1420, ive used this laptop with gutsy and for a long time, then my laptop got broken and now its back, i installed jaunty but i cant get any of the effects to work, if i click on extra or even normal, it tells me that desktop effects could not be enabled, ill try doing updates, i havent updated it

According to Google, your Inspiron has an Intel GM45 video chipset -- and 9.04 is known to have serious problems with Intel video chipsets.

I've read that those problems have been largely fixed in 9.10. So, you can download an RC disk tomorrow and boot with that as a liveCD and see how it performs, or you could wait a week and download the released version and try the same.
