It is not, strictly speaking, a port of Picasa to Linux. Instead, Linux Picasa combines Windows Picasa code and Wine technology to run Windows Picasa on Linux.

I knew all along the time would come. Open Source and Linux are slowly gaining ground.

I think I'd rather see Google sponsor some F-Spot development. I guess that's why I don't get to choose. :)

I think its a good think that its running in WINE. Gives money to codeweavers (who add a lot to WINE) and legitamizes "porting" programs in that fashion if someone big like Google does it. Maybe someone like Adobe will emulate them.
Better than nothing.

Well seems to be good news.
The idea of using wine isn't a new one corel did the same with corel draw 9 years ago.
At that time they made a push linux wasn't so popular maybe we'll see a change.
Hopefully it will convince others to do the same.
I'm not sure on googletalk as that is a chat client and most distros come with gaim and soon gaim will have jingle support.
Google earth would of been a better move for them but this is better than a kick in the teeth.
Hopefully CodeWeavers will get more people working with them.

it's not using wine. it's using wine technowlegy... i can't really explain it, but it's not the same as emulation.

I'm already running Picasa in wine, so what is the difference in what I am doing now and what they are planning to do?

People won't even have to install Wine to run it. It will have its own very limited Wine libs.

Ide still feel better if it were native. :( Though I love F-Spot. I still like Google.

I'd be very interested in Google Earth coming our way. Hell, I'll do my part and download Picasa, just to inspire Google to move onto Linux.

I think that picasa is almost all ported to wine. Just install picasa with wine and see how it works surprisingly well. It's almost deployable as it is

It's still proprietary free beer. I don't want it.
