Wasn't sure where to put this as it is nothing to do with Ubuntu or even open source but I wondered if perhaps I could borrow the expertise of the users on the largest tech forum I know:)

Basically I am currently using Orange broadband (uk) which is upto 8mb/s but i've never been able to get more then 800kb/s which I always thought was okay however it dropped considerably 6 months ago and it hasn't got better.... I was getting an actual download speed of 240kb/s as of this morning

however after some Googling and some help from another forum (http://www.orangeproblems.co.uk) I was told to remove the face plate of the phone socket and use the hidden test plug which tripled my speed (700kbp/s ish) but this is still very little considering I live 0.4miles (0.6km) I have a friend who lives 0.7miles (1.1km) away who gets over 4mb/s!!!!

See map at bottom of me my friend and the exchange:P

A Is me on orange broadband only 0.4m away from the exchange on 700kb/s
B Is my mate on BT Broadband only 0.7m away from the exchange on 4.3mb/s
C Is the BT Exchange

Can you please specify which interface you're using, wired or wifi?
Also, the card model and the driver used, uname -a, etc...
There's a serious bug on iwl3945 for intel wireless pro cards, so if you're one of those unlucky people using that chipset do what I do and start looking for another distro because no one seems to care for that issue.

I hate you.

My broadband is like 1Mb nominal, but is really like 128 kbps and I have like 15 kbps of download speed.

Be thankful of what you have.

I get 14mb down. 8-) Takes about 7min to download a 700mb iso. And yes, I am thankful.

To the OP: Call customer service.

Planning to, but you know how they all read from a script and if it's not on the script or it's not an obvious problem then your stuck:( I can tell that I'm going to be on the phone for hours trying to explain this one:)

and if I manage to get this sorted I'll be able to get 14mb down after 31/03/2010:guitar:

Call customer service, if they can't give you an answer right then and there ask for a supervisor, if they wont transfer you or even he won't solve it ask for the cancelations deparment, if they want to charge you to cancel ask for legal and tell them they are in breach of contract by not delivering the speed they charge you for.
