I would like to install ubuntu on an USB drive of 4GB so I can have a working version wherever I can find a computer able to boot from USB. After the installation I would like run the update and install some programs, codecs and flash player.
In the USB creator presents in ubuntu 9.04 at a certain point there is the question 'how much space would you like to set aside?' (those are not the exactly word used in the question). Anyway, it i possible to scroll and change the size of that space from 128MB to about 3GB.

What is that space for?

That space needs to be loaded in the ram when ubuntu is working, so is it compulsory to choose a size not greater then the ram, or is it possible to assign the whole 3GB of free space?

Thanks for your help!
