Visual Studio ---> Eclipse

In this area, unfortunately, Windows wins hands down. But you don't need to say that on your page! ;)

Not agreed. Eclipse people have their agenda. And to say Visual Studio is for starters only, disingenuous.

How does ardour measure against ProTools? I have a friend who is interested in using ubuntu but needs protools for his work and is afraid that linux might not have a proper alternative.

I can't speak for everyone, and am pretty sure Ardour is NOT as complete as Pro Tools (just think how much Pro Tools costs and how much R&D goes into it).... what I can say is that many well respected producers (mainly in the electronic music scene) use Ardour plus the other Jack-apps like Specimen, Seq24, AMS... etc these days with stunning results.

Don't take me to court on this, though.
I suggest your friend get more info if he's really thinking of changing.

Edit:
If your friend is more of a musician and not really into the whole sound engineering thing, he might like http://www.energy-xt.com/ ... there's a trial/demo available for Linux, iirc.
