When you download songs from Amazon, is any data about you included in the file?

How can you completely strip out metadata from a file (including any custom or hidden fields)?

Thanks!

Check out mp3diags (apt:mp3diags) to strip metadata. That app probably has what you're looking for.

From Wikipedia:

"Amazon does not apply watermarks. Files are generally provided to us from the labels and some labels use watermarks to identify the retailer who sold the tracks (there is no information on the tracks that identifies the customer)." The study concluded that although tracks may be watermarked to indicate that they were purchased on Amazon MP3, there is no data to indicate which specific customer purchased a given MP3 file.

It's supposed to show how Amazon is in support of openness and DRM-freedom and it's also a selling point against iTunes.

Do Apple 'watermark' track bought from iTunes with the purchasers details?

Yes, with your account details. Open a music file with notepad or something, you'll see it.

I download from Amazon also, and wondered a few times about that. Whether any of my info was in the mp3 file. Glad they don't do that.
