Have you seen this craziness (http://digzine.com)? For those who've never heard of Digzine: it's a "hacker" zine similar to Phrack. This is what puzzles me. Phrack.org (http://phrack.org) hasn't been closed down. So why Digzine?

This ought to be a freedom of speech/free press issue. 2600 Hacker Quarterly has survived as long as it has largely because it's a printed magazine. But the US authorities are comfortable about persecuting webzines. It's clear to me that this is wrong. There's no real difference between a regular, printed-on-paper magazine and a webzine. So they should both be protected from over-zealous cops.

Incidentally, if you scroll down to the bottom of that web page, you'll see your ip address and some rubbish about how the Dept Homeland Security will log your ip and investigate you. Then, at the end it says:

Be aware that disguising or concealing IP information shall be considered a criminal violation of section 814 of the USA PATRIOT Act. Should you suspect that your IP address and host have been improperly recorded, contact a DHS representative immediately.

This is blatantly insane. Using an anonymous proxy or some other anonymiser to protect your privacy is illegal? The US government has got right into the role of Big Brother. You don't need a tin foil hat to recognize this.

Does anyone have a working link to an archive of Digzine? Don't worry, I'm not a fed. I'm just curious: was ther a specific article that drew the DHS's wrath?

It's not illegal to log IP's, most sites that like to be secure do it/should do it.

Man, I for one am breathing a sigh of relief for the collective here.

Sorry, Digzine doesn't show up in any News articles.

Or maybe that's what *they* want us to see.

It's not the actual logging that concerns me. It's the threat to "investigate" the person linked to that ip. And the statement that obfuscating your ip address is a crime.

But I'm beginning to believe this page might be a joke. I used the Wayback Machine (http://www.archive.org/web/web.php) to view archived versions of the page. Looking at a 2008 version, I saw that the most recent issue of Digzone to be 2006. Why on earth would the Dept Homeland Security want to close down such an out of date site? Phrack.org is still up. Why close Digzine?
