After installing Ubuntu (either 8.10 or 9.04), everything works great until I install the Nvidia drivers (tried 173, 180, and 185). After that, it won't boot. The error message at failed startup has taken at least four distinct forms, most of which say something about the BIOS not communicating properly, which I'm not really buying since 8.04 works fine, and 8.10 and 9.04 work without Nvidia drivers.

Is this a known problem? Any ideas on it?

Well, I never had problems with NVIDIA drivers in Ubuntu 8.10 or 9.04 and always installed the one recommended by Ubuntu developers. But I faced the same problem as mentioned above with 9.10 beta. Everything was good until I installed the NVIDIA drivers, which made my notebook not to boot (Acer Aspire 4520). I get a blank screen, no error message. Since 9.10 is still beta, I am not worried about it because I know the same problem won't be in stable release of 9.01. I am waiting for 9.01 Karmic Koala :guitar:
