I could have sworn I saw (somewhere) that Ubuntu 4.10 (Warty) was scheduled to be released on 10/20 - is that still on, or am I having another senior moment? :wink:

According to the wiki, yes. Be aware that release dates are rather flexible creatures.

What exactly is it? I mean is it just updates and upgrades or what? What significant changes are there going to be?

It will be the final release code for warty. Probably not much different than the release candidate, bug fixes and such.

I assume we can get this with a simple apt-get update && apt-get dist-upgrade?

But of course. That's the beauty of a debian-based system.

Use bittorrent, they are giving us a great distro, don't let's make them pay for overhead bandwidth!

Better yet, just do a dist-upgrade if you've already installed.

Yes, it's out - mirrors are being updated. I'm kinda old-fashioned & conservative, I like to have the actual release version on (semi-) permanent media - so I just finished the D/L & burn. Will post if there's anything unexpected....

You mean Warty isn't the new testing version?

Far from it. Warty was the first release of Ubuntu. Notice the date on the first post in the thread.

I'm trying to work out whether you've had one alcoholic beverage too many, or are serious?!?

I'm tending towards the former since I've seen most of your previous posts suggest that you've normally got your head screwed on the correct way round.

Hardy Heron is the new testing version. It goes alphabetically.

Dapper Drake -> Edgy Eft -> Feisty Fawn -> Gutsy Gibbon -> Hardy Heron.

not to poke a hole in your logic but how does w come before d?

I know 4.10 was the first release, but why version 4? shouldn't it start at version 1? :confused:

They started the cycle with Dapper Drake, IIRC.

Warty Warthog -> Hoary Hedgehog -> Breezy Badger -> Dapper Drake.

Let's also not forget about the other H release: Hoary Hedgehog

That's part of the naming logic. 4.10 isn't really a version, it's a date.

October, 2004.
October is the 10th month.

[200]4.10

4.10 Warty Warthog 2004-10-20
5.04 Hoary Hedgehog 2005-04-08
5.10 Breezy Badger 2005-10-13
6.06 Dapper Drake 2006-06-01
6.10 Edgy Eft 2006-10-26
7.04 Feisty Fawn 2007-04-19
7.10 Gutsy Gibbon 2007-10-18
8.04 Hardy Heron 2008-04-24

4 = the year of the release, 10 = the month.

Oct of 2004.

EDIT: LoKe beat me to it!

Ah I see, thanks for that, I actually was wondering at the strange versioning scheme, it seems pretty logical, to use dates. :)

So I guess Gutsy Gibbon 7.10 is the October 2007 release, Gotcha ;)

Yep, and they're always in 6 month cycles, so there's no reason to ask when the next one comes out.

7.10 = October 2007.
8.04 = April 2008.
8.10 = October 2008.
9.04 = April 2009.

There is an exception, though. I believe Dapper Drake was released in June 2006 (6.06). There was a considerable delay. Despite the late release, Edgy Eft (6.10) still made it to us on time.

I noticed the break in the pattern with that release, although I assumed it was because the bump from '04' to '06' meant it had extra features or something like that.

7.10 = October 2007.
8.04 = April 2008.
8.10 = October 2008.
9.04 = April 2009.

After 2009 I guess it would go like this

9.10 = October 2009
10.04 = April 2010
10.10 = October 2010
11.04 = April 2011
11.10 = October 2011
12.04 = April 2012

Just a joke, guys. I've been "using" since Hoary Hedgehog first came out. I just thought it would be cool to bring back some nostalgia.

And thanks to AndyCooll for suggesting that I have my head screwed on right.
