I have a Dell laptop running Ubuntu with a Gnome desktop. I also have a Sony 40" flat panel TV with an XVGA input. If I plug the TV in as an external monitor on the laptop I get a second display which is correctly detected by the X system. The desktop background image is resized appropriately, and I have the run of the entire screen with the mouse cursor. Application windows can be resized and moved normally, and work appropriately with the large 9 x 16 aspect display, in "stunning high definition."

The only parts of my desktop that _don't_ detect the alternate screen are the several gnome panels along the edges of the screen. They stubbornly remain in positions, and of sizes appropriate for the laptop's 1024 x 768 native display, and I can see no way to re-size and re-position them.

Any help with this will be appreciated.
