Some of these new LCD monitors are so bright as to be blinding. I can control the brightness via the Windows driver for my Intel graphics on-board (DG965OT) but I do not know how to do this in Ubuntu.

The Power Manager Brightness Applet seems only to apply to laptops! Even then, I have never successfully seen this feature function on any laptop or desktop as of yet that I hvae used (I have tried this on three different laptops and two different desktops).

Is there a command line function that can be used to manually alter the brightness of the monitor? There must be a way as the screen gradually dims when inactive through the power management system.

There is no video folder in my procs directory so I'd like to preempt any solutions towards that area. This is a desktop problem.
