Hi all
I just reinstalled 8.04 and it keeps freezing on me. I have run into threads that indicate that issue is caused by the kernel and that an updated kernel could resolve it.
Unfortunately, hardy freezes everytime I attempt to install kernel-package to update the kernel.

Any ideas?

I am attempting to upgrade using recovery mode; that's something I haven't tried yet; upgrading from root

I was successful in my attempt to upgrade from Hardy to Intrepid using the recovery mode - root option. However the freezing issue continued.

I checked uname -r and I still had kernel version 2.24.16, so I used synaptic to install 2.27...something. That took care of the freezing issue, but now, I have no wireless access.

Any thoughts?

Well, I still have intrepid and I have 2 kernels I can use
2.6.24-16 and
2.6.27-3-rt

The first one is the one that I believed caused the system freezes and the second one lost me wireless access. Its hard to decide on what to do there.

Any suggestions?

My research indicates that the system freeze has something to do with xorg.conf

I have edited mine a bit, but a lot of the threads I found indicated it happens more with Thinkpads and other laptops using the i810 driver. Mine is a desktop using i810.

Oddly enough, the xorg.conf files I found on the net have many more options than mine does.

Hereś my current xorg.conf

xoanan@ubuntu:/$ cat /etc/X11/xorg.conf
# xorg.conf (X.Org X Window System server configuration file)
#
# This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
# values from the debconf database.
#
# Edit this file with caution, and see the xorg.conf manual page.
# (Type "man xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
#
# This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
# if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
# package.
#
# If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
# again, run the following command:
# sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

That didn't work; I had to go into recovery mode; doing the "fix broken packages" using dpkg. I will post back when I get a chance. dpkg is installing another kernel as well. It appears to be 2.6.27-14-generic. Not sure what that will do but... we will see:popcorn:

Well gang, "Fix broken packages" seems to have fixed the issue. The new kernel seems to be working fine and I also have wireless internet too! Currently running Intrepid and I think I will stay there.

Thanx All!

The pc has been on all night; so far, no freezing and I still have internet access!! All is well, I think!
