If I copy (backup) all the files in my /mark (home folder) including the . files which are software applications such as .adobe, .alsaplayer

once I install Karmic Koala 9.10 will copying the . (dot) files restore their operation? How will Karmic know which icons, to put int he Application Menu and on the Desktop?

The .program folders are typically settings for those specific programs. They will keep your settings in-tact, but not the programs themselves. You will need to re-install all of those apps, but once you do, your settings for those programs should be restored. When you re-install the programs, they will create their own menu entries as they did before.

**Please Note: Before doing any kind of upgrading or fresh re-install, make sure to backup all of your important files and data that you don't want to risk losing**
