Hola,

I see alot of names on this forum some quite self explanatory, some humourous, some disgusting, and most just downright confusing.

Just wanna know how u came up with these names

I had a Scooter book WAYYYY back when scooting was cool, and it explained that u need a cool nickname to be a "scooter" and it gave a few choices one of which were "razor" and other was "boy" so i added it together with my fav num 5 and ta-da

-grubby
October 12th, 2009, 03:22 AM
I used to use my real name, but enough people started calling me grubby that I switched to it.

xuCGC002
October 12th, 2009, 03:23 AM
Well, a long time ago, when I used Windows, I used a program called Game Maker, which I then used to startup a small "company". I was about 11 when I started it. I called it "Collin's Game Company, or CGC for short. There was a site "Game Maker Games" that I joined, and I needed a name. So I took CGC. However, the site required at least six characters for the name, so I put in "002" as 2 was my favorite number and the extra zeros filled the character limits. Thus CGC002 was born, and I've used it for pretty much everything except this forum, where I added "xu" at the front due to me using Xubuntu at the time.

Corfy

Someone took the name Cloud already, a someone who has only 2 posts and hasn't logged on since 2005 :icon_frown:. Anyways, I like to keep somewhat consistent username across the majority of sites/networks that I'm on and thus the ! was necessary. As for the actual origin of the name, it all started one day in a slsk chat room.....:p

kidux
October 12th, 2009, 04:47 AM
My nickname IRL is Kid, but the name was taken, so I add ux in honor of Linux.

jpmelos
October 12th, 2009, 04:59 AM
jpmelos stands for my real name, Joćo Paulo Melo de Sampaio... And my nickname is written all lowercase. It's not Jpmelos, it's jpmelos. I hate when people write Jpmelos. It's written jpmelos there, where the hell did you take that uppercase J from!?

Yea, that kind of makes me angry. :)

Tipped OuT
October 12th, 2009, 05:02 AM
Trippen Out.

Made a couple of typo's and typed "Tipped OuT" instead.

Now I use this nickname for everything.

j.bell730
October 12th, 2009, 05:12 AM
Jared Bell, my real name (yep, same as the actor known as "Drake Bell"), "730" is "July 30", or my birthday.

madhi19
October 12th, 2009, 05:25 AM
Started using it a decade ago while playing Counter-Strike kind of stuck so I use it all the time. You can look me up on twitter, Youtube and god know where else I use madhi19 over the years!

Dimitriid

Self explanatory: One that has contempt for all humans in general.

JDShu
October 12th, 2009, 05:54 AM
J - first initial of the English translation of my first name (first name is German)
D - first letter of a synonym to a pun on my last name
Shu - my "middle" name

Nice thread idea! I'm waiting for some of the more colorful personalities here :P

barthel
October 12th, 2009, 06:03 AM
Barthel aus Pennswald is my SCA name--has been for nearly 30 years. (And last I looked, I was still the only registered "Barthel" in the SCA College of Arms.)

You could loosely translate it as "the bearded guy from Pennsylvania".

NightHawk877
October 12th, 2009, 07:03 AM
After using my AOL screen name, RaceDrv709, on a lot of forums for many years I thought I needed a cooler name and that's how I got NightHawk877. Now if only I had AchmedTheDeadTerrorist as a name here. I use that in Tremulous.

eragon100
October 12th, 2009, 08:47 AM
Back when I registered here I wasn“t adicted to anime yet (didn“t even know what it was :lolflag:)

And my favorite books are the "Inheritance" series, ya know, about Eragon and Saphira. I love those books!

If I had registered today I would offcourse have registered some kind of anime nick, because I like that even more :KS

lisati
October 12th, 2009, 08:53 AM
Not "Lisa Ti", which would be odd since I'm a bloke, but the Samoan equivalent of my real name, Richard. Pronounced a bit like Lee Sarty or Liss Arty.

bodyharvester
October 12th, 2009, 09:31 AM
there was a game on the Nintendo 64 called Body Harvest.

its my way of saying things were better "back then",

the older games are always the best to me. Perfect Dark, Future Cop LAPD, television largely sucks too, only good stuff is anything by Seth Macfarlane and Mock THe Week and 8 out of ten cats.

i also dont like young people today, too stupid, i blame reality tv and they just wanna be pop stars or something disgraceful. food nowadays is bad too, its too processed.

jeez, youd never guess my age from that :)

xpod
October 12th, 2009, 10:03 AM
Xpod was just a silly username that entered my head when i first discovered Ubuntu and signed up here, after finding my original choice was already taken.

I`d only used computers/Windows for four months before discovering Ubuntu but i`d quite possibly had 4 years worth of Windows issues during that very short time so when xpod first entered my head it had meant xp.o.d (XP over dose).
A few installations/computers/months later and any meaning had completely evolved......it now meant X-pod.

True story:)

Nozze
October 12th, 2009, 10:25 AM
My old nick (back when I was 13-14) was Nozferatu. Then my friends started to call me Nozze (which is short in swedish for Nozferatu).

beercz
October 12th, 2009, 10:57 AM
I was drinking Czech beer at the time I signed up.

I'm still drinking Czech beer :-)

t0p
October 12th, 2009, 11:06 AM
Some folk call me "Top" because that's the first syllable of my surname. It's "t0p" online, cos this is the interwebs and I had to l33t it up a bit!

XubuRoxMySox
October 12th, 2009, 11:12 AM
I use it for just about everything. It's a reference to my favorite dance form, American Clogging. Clogging is (mostly) a percussive dance form; noisy, rowdy, raucous fun. It spread to the rest of the world from Dixie, but even Dixie borrowed a lot from the Irish and Indians early on. Think "Hillbilly Riverdance" and that describes it pretty well.

Xbehave
October 12th, 2009, 11:18 AM
xplicit behaviour, was a name i used when gaming, the meaning of it was simply that my actions were explicit and in your face (like explicit lyrics, not explicit code).

This got abbreviated to xbehave for IRC.

I have reverted to my previous username (rioting_pacifist) almost everywhere else, I used xbehave when i signed up to UF (or I forgot my password for rioting_pacifist) and I can't be bothered to sign up again to get my better username.

rioting_pacifist seams counter intuitive, but ironically describes me rather well, something I could not have foreseen when i was ~13.

suitedaces
October 12th, 2009, 12:01 PM
In hold 'em, aces are the best starting hand, but a lot of people are obsessed with their hands being suited (ie they might think Ace of Hearts and Ten of hearts is far better than ace of hearts and ten of spades.)

Anyhoo, because of this obsession poor players have, there is a private joke amongst me and my friends (and i assume within the wider poker community) that if we're asked what cards we have, it's always "suited aces", the implication that they're far better than just ordinary aces (best possible hand), yet it's impossible to get that hand.

Kinda loses its humour when you explain it!

the8thstar
October 12th, 2009, 01:42 PM
I'm the 8th Star of the Big Dipper, Alcor. Most people don't notice it in the sky so I took the nickname because I like to go unnoticed.

Bölvašur
October 12th, 2009, 02:36 PM
It was the gaming name I used at the time of my registration to this forum.

The gaming nick I had before Bölvašur is a word that is really really bad for a gaming nick, it was Shipment. If I'd be forced to translate Bölvašur to English I'd say it means "cursed" so when a fellow Icelander got owned by me (at the time I was the top player in my country) he'd say "bölvašur" (curse you!).

My brother's nick is actually better. He started out with Knésettur (some one that has been broken down, beaten, bent down and waiting for spanking) and changed it to Knésetur (and then it means he is the one that breaks you down, the one that does the spanking).

koshatnik
October 12th, 2009, 02:37 PM
Koshatnik is either Russian for cat lover, or a dealer in stolen cats. I chose the name for the latter, not the former, definition.

I don't deal in stolen cats though. Not anymore.

Tristam Green
October 12th, 2009, 06:42 PM
Jesus Valdez, Hes a cool guy and doesnt afraid of anything.

Awesome.

Tristam Green is a multi-faceted persona. He's an Elementalist in Guild Wars, was a Dark Knight in Final Fantasy XI Online, is also a character in my friend's self-made comic and stories "The Crystal Rose Chronicles", was a combatant in Team Fortress, Counter-Strike (proud old-school [S9] member!), Half-Life Deathmatch, "The Specialists" and Natural Selection, and is my alternate personality online.

dragos240
October 12th, 2009, 07:33 PM
A while back, I used to play an online java based game called "runescape". When I started, my friend recommended "dragos" for me. Unfortunately, the name was taken. The automatic renaming system recommended 240 as a possible option. So I picked it, so dragos and 240 because just dragos wasn't available. Ever since, it's been my primary username for almost everything.

schauerlich
October 12th, 2009, 07:56 PM
Back in the good old days of AOL, around 1995 or so, my dad made account names for everyone in my family. We were all <firstname>Burg, as burg is the last part of our last name. EricBurg was already taken (Eric is my first name), so he used EDavidBurg instead (David is my middle name). I've kept it ever since.

Interesting reading indeed.

Mine is a contraction of my business name when I was a self employed computer geek.

Kinda dull in comparison ain't it ??

Warpnow
October 12th, 2009, 08:02 PM
When I was 11, I coded for a MOO (Mud(Multi-User Dungeon) Objective Oriented), or a text based game. I coded a command for a star trek ship I built, when you typed warp 3 to <place>, it would do like:

Kirk says, "Prepare for warp speed in 3..."

Kirk says, "2"

1 second later.

Kirk says, "1"

The ship enters warp speed.

Or something like that, been a while. People complained about the wait, so I added the possibility to type "warp now" for immediate transport. Thus, my name was born.

Grukmuck
October 12th, 2009, 10:26 PM
A few years ago when I first started playing WoW, my roommate and I started on the alliance side. One day we decided to switch to the horde and find his brother and follow him around and try to annoy him as much as possible with out him finding out it was us. Eventually we ended up liking the horde so much that we switched permanently. Grukmuck was the name that I gave my troll shaman. It is now the name I use for almost everything: games, usernames, alternate email adresses and so forth. Sometimes I shorten it to just Gruk. So if you're ever playing a game online and run across someone named gruk, or grukmuck there's a pretty good chance its me, because I haven't seen too many people use it before. Hopefully I dont see it being used, that would just irritate the pants off me.

Cope57
October 12th, 2009, 10:49 PM
About every six months, a similar thread emerges. After a quick Search (http://ubuntuforums.org/search.php), I found a few.

How did u choose your username? (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=864008&)

Why did you choose your screen name? (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=846611&)

Ubuntu users nicknames (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=791306&)

What does your UserName mean?? (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=705184&)

Nickname Origins (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=89897&)

username/avatar - a little forum psychology (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=332724&)

I guess I will repeat myself once again for those that do not know...

Cope57 started from the tobacco product called Copenhagen snuff. This was back in 1993 when I used the product, and was creating an email account on hotmail. I tried copenhagen@h*tmail.com, but it was already taken.
Hotmail suggested I use copenhagen57, copenhagen58, choose a different one, or use my real name.

I chose copenhagen57, and it was shortened to Cope57 for forums and other online nick name usage. So, there you have it, even though I no longer use the Copenhagen product I kept Cope57 as my nick.

Some people have even been bored enough to Google me (http://www.google.com/search?q=Cope57), and usually find I am somewhat active on the Internet.

#11u-max
October 12th, 2009, 11:39 PM
i would think that nobody really understands my username, so i will "solve" it for you...

i race karts (http://www.fkadirtseries.com/), and my racing number is eleven (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/11). the U-MAX part came from the brand of my kart which is an utramax. (http://www.ultramaxracing.com/)

that sums it up...

I thought of something short and easy to type (although I've lived here since '81, I'm not a native Iowan).

Old_Grey_Wolf
October 13th, 2009, 01:51 AM
In the 80's, before the Internet was generally available, I chatted using Amateur Radio (HAM, CB, etc.). That was my "handle" or how I identified myself casually. I was living in a small town, so people knew who I was. My hair was turning gray. I had long hair, and a long beard that was almost as wide as my shoulders. :)

Morse Code: --- .-.. -.. --. .-. .- -.-- .-- --- .-.. ..-.

Nothing like chatting in binary. :lolflag:
