Do you want something that (always) WORKS on Nvidia? Use the proprietary driver

Do you want to make a FOSS statement on Nvidia? i.e. A driver that doesn't always work (i.e. 3d), but it at least is open source? Use the OS drivers that sort of work in many situations.

Are you stuck with an ATi card? Use whatever works. The ATi proprietary linux drivers are developed by a room full of monkeys. The OS ATi drivers barely work some of the time also.

My favorite subject :D

However, instead of telling you stuff that could be wrong, I will just point you to here. (http://www.phoronix.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=43)

Theres alot of up-to-date information about the open source ATI drivers there.
