SCIM removed, Compose Key stil not working

I installed SCIM to be able to type Chinese characters using pinyin. That disabled the Compose Key, which seems to be a known feature.

Now I uninstalled SCIM but my Compose Key is not back. I played around System>Preferences>Keyboard unchecking and rechecking the Compose Key check-box with no effect.

Any help appreciated!
