Their server is slower than my connection it seems like. Ran it over and over and I was topping out at:

Your download speed: 2.342 Megabits per second
Your upload speed: 567.2 kilobits per second

But if I run the test on any other site its between 5 and 6 megabits per second.

Yeah, that server is way off.

NetHealth.net:
Your download speed: 1.459 Megabits per second
Your upload speed: 961.0 kilobits per second

SpeedTest.net:

Believe it or not, that's one of my worse scores. It's usually around 90mbps down and 30mbps up. University internet is awesome, it's just too bad they monitor it for torrents and block a bunch of convenient ports. :)

I guess it also depends on the througjput on the networks you travers to reach the server you test against.

This is Net Health

Your download speed: 6.150 Megabits per second
Your upload speed: 646.5 kilobits per second

This is Speadtest against a server on my ISP's network -

As far as I know Shaw is only available in the Nortwest Corner of Ontario. Several years ago Shaw and Rogers split up the country as far as cable TV goes, so Rogers isn't available here and Shaw isn't available there.

The results don't show the real spped, Shaw uses something called speed boost, it ups the download speed for the first 10 seconds, then it drop back to normal speeds. I pay $45.00 a month for 7.5 down and 500 up.

Europe kicks our butt here in the US! Maybe time to start writing LETTERS to the providers?

markbuntu

In the EU and Japan internet providers are considered common carriers and so have to open their networks to resellers so competition is fierce. Also, many countries have initiatives to provide high speed service to everyone in the country and the telecoms are racing to be the best.

None of that is happening in the US. There is a bill in congress to make ISPs common carriers. Please contact your congresspeople and urge them to support this.
