I am going to see "Gamer" this afternoon, which looks pretty awesome as well :D

And although it isn't very new, I watched an awesome anime movie called "steamboy" last night. It's really very cool/funny. Highly recommended!

I'm not a trekkie or a big fan of Star Trek. I'm more a BSG kind of fan. Nevertheless, I have re-watched all Star Trek movies recently. I also have watched lots of the original series episodes when I was young, but I never cared about The New Generation or any other spin-off.

Bottom line, I don't really care if the plot contradicts the original series. Actually, could you explain why, because it was perfectly normal for me, considering that it's an alternate reality.

Anyway, IMO this is not only the best movie I have seen for a long time, but also the best of the Star Trek movies. I guess I'm not alone...

As of 16 September 2009 (2009 -09-16)[update], the film holds a 95% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes with 259 out of 273 critics giving it a positive review with an average rating of 8.1/10, surpassing all other feature films in the franchise.[7] The film also holds a score of 83 as of 13 May 2009 (2009 -05-13)[update] on the review aggregator website Metacritic, tying for fifth of film releases in 2009 to date.

Consensus: Star Trek reignites a classic franchise with action, humor, a strong story, and brilliant visuals, and will please traditional Trekkies and new fans alike.

Source: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/star_trek_11/

The film's first normal US screenings were at 7 p.m. on May 7, 2009,[151] grossing $4 million on its opening day. By the end of the weekend, Star Trek had opened with $79,204,300, as well as $35,500,00 from other countries. Adjusted and unadjusted for inflation, it beat Star Trek: First Contact for the largest US opening for a Star Trek film. The film made $8.5 million from its IMAX screenings, breaking The Dark Knight's $6.3 million IMAX opening record.[152] The film is the highest-grossing domestically in the entire Star Trek film franchise, eclipsing the previous leader, The Voyage Home (which made $109,713,100 unadjusted for inflation), and adjusted for inflation, Star Trek: The Motion Picture. Its opening weekend numbers alone outgross the entire runs of The Undiscovered Country, The Final Frontier, Insurrection and Nemesis.[153] Star Trek ended its domestic theatrical run on October 1, 2009, with a box office total of $257,730,019, which places it as the fifth highest-grossing film for 2009.

Not being a Star Trek connoisseur, the new movie didn't sucked as hard as... well, the original TV show, for example. But its far from being the new best movie out there, since the directing job still sucked. Science fiction doesn't seem like J.J. Abrams' forte. Those random non-sense blue lights were the biggest annoyance of them all. But had a solid story-line and the rest of the special effects were also solid.

As for science fiction, I think District 9 is very, very good.

Actually I like the original Star Trek series the best.

I know, most people do. And its story-line is good, innovative if you keep the historical context in mind but, even then... you knew those actors' performances were mediocre at best. Especially William Shatner. He did great on Boston Legal, though. I wonder why... LOL

Uggh.

The new Trek film butchered the last remaining shred of dignity the IP had left. It was unashamedly aimed at the lowest common denominator and the story was borderline incomprehensible.

District 9 is an example of perfect concept, flawed execution. It drew on many sci-fi influences and was one of the truest attempts at social-commentary-through-allegory in the genre; it was just let down by superficial character writing and the insufferable, "shaky camera", mockumentary direction, which seems to be the current fashion.

Also have to capital LOL at people citing critical reception, as if that somehow validates their own viewpoint or invalidates anyone else's.

Good for you. The only IMAX theater "close" to my town is about 60 Km away and it's one of two available in the entire country. Besides, all movies are dubbed, so they suck really hard. I can't stand dubbed movies.

Just saw District 9, its not just science fiction, but really surreal stuff, reminded Kafka's 'Metamorphosis' you know this "One morning, as Gregor Samsa was waking up from anxious dreams, he discovered that in bed he had been changed into a monstrous verminous bug"

Movies I have enjoyed lately:

Zombieland: hugely funny, doesn't take itself to seriously and the banjo scene is just priceless.

The Hangover: funny movie for those dull afternoons nothing to serious.

Watchmen (directors cut): a deep story, interesting.

The Gamers: Dorkness Rising: the best movie of all time, period.

Taken: a thrilling ride of kickassery and vengence, feels realistic.

Man Som Hatar Kvinnor: a wonderfully paced Swedish crime story, beautiful scenery, elegant story and interesting characters.

Black Dynamite: funny take on blaxplotation movies, hits all the right notes and remains the right amount of ridiculous.

Coraline: childlike, scary, interesting.

Fanboys: hits all those geek special places in my heart.

I Can't Think Straight: touching, sexy story about love forbidden by society and religion. Probably one of my favorite movies lately.

The Maiden Heist: A brilliant atypical heist movie with a great cast. I have a special love for heist movies.

Saw VI: I love the Saw series, I love Jigsaw as a bad guy precisely because he's not straight forward.

Extremely good film. One of those exceedingly rare, purist science fiction films, that doesn't patronise it's audience. Only thing I disliked was the radio chatter in the final scene; too much information.

Bump. Been watching a lot of films, lately. I'll constrain this to the most recently released, however.

Inglorious Basterds

What the ****. This film is the longest, most ridiculous Monty Python sketch in history. To borrow an oddly appropriate cliche: I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop - it never did. It just gets further and further away from any semblance of reality (or taste/propriety - it is a Tarantino film, after all).

May god have mercy on many a history teacher in the public school system. 8/10

The Invention of Lying

This is the anti-Bruce Almighty: where Almighty started with a strong premise and descended into the drudgery of taking itself too seriously, Lying started with a half-baked, slightly muddy premise and allowed it to evolve into something rather more complex and compelling, with no small amount of allegory. It requires getting over the sparse, contrived and generally not very funny beginnings of this film but once Gervais' character starts 'using his power for good', there are so many little touches that seem to be missed by people who flew into a rage over either Garner's character's 'unlikeability', or the rather simple jabs taken at religion. I imagine this is why I wasn't particularly miffed by either the ending's lack of closure or big lump of celluloid: with the former, it successfully avoided the self-certain preachiness of films like Almighty, while the latter was justified (or at least excused) by the film's overall substance (something you can't say of many other romantic comedies *cough*- How to Lose Friends). A little inconsistent in places but ultimately a little more respectable for it: it avoided becoming over-produced, sterile, or an argument.

The new Sherlock Holmes (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sherlock_Holmes_%282009_film%29) film :) ... yes maybe one or two bits were predictableWell that's not exactly a good sign in a Holmes adaptation. Nor is all the action and explosions in the trailers, for that matter.

I saw 9 as well but I wouldn't say I was impressed. The formula is normally visuals for the kids, writing for the adults and that formula, for the most part, works. 9 turned that concept on it's head and failed miserably, for me.

Accurate, no; dignified, yes. If Holmes were anything like The Time Machine remake I watched the other night, it would denigrate the source material.

That said, a predictable Holmes mystery would be irredeemable, Hollywood action or no.

I didn't enjoy Inglourious Basterds at all. It made me seriously numb in the bum and, after a while, I found it increasingly difficult to concentrate. I don't think I have ever seen Brad Pitt play a more unconvincing character. I thought that Col. Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz) was quite good, though. Imo, this "orgy/fantasy of revenge" deserves 4/10.

I'm by no means a big Pitt fan but I'm pretty sure his caricature portrayal was intentional (and downright hilarious). I can understand being bored; it's very much a film where you have to turn your brain off and testicles on, for extended periods of time. And yes, Christoph Waltz was outstanding.

Copypasta. I know Baby Mama isn't all that new.

Baby Moma

All right. Doesn't really nail the drama elements, though.

The Proposal

The war of attrition in the film half of the film is fantastic. Knowing it had to come to some kind of Hollywood resolution loomed over my enjoyment, though. The final act was pretty bad: basically all the cheese of a Sandler comedy, without the self-awareness. Ryan Reynolds continues to impressively confuse the sexuality of forumers everywhere.

7/10

Coraline

Incredible. Fantastic claymation that employs CGI without abusing it. A very lush fairy tale with strong hints of Dahl and Burton, that doesn't shy away from or try to disguise it's inherently dark and disturbed story. It also has some truly magnetic characters (although Hodgman's Hodgmanness is a little distracting at times).

Antitrust, like the Wing Commander film, is one of my guilty pleasures. They're both poppy films with casting designed to appeal to the young demographics. They're both exploitation in their own right. They're also contrived, unintelligible and push their credibility to their absolute limit, in places - but they're both still immensely fun, engrossing films.
