Has anyone played this is it worth the effort to get it running on Linux? Seems like a fun game but i'd like to hear so input before I invest the time to accutally get it to work.

I ran it once, never had a tech problem with it. I hate the game though, I am not really into that medieval wow themed RPG crap as a general rule.

ROFL! Amen to that lol
I would say Neverwinter Nights was pretty cool though :) I enjoyed it but didn't play it for long.

It's not that hard to get running; there's a tutorial on Bioware's web site that will get you up and running in under a half hour.
It's a fun game, especially the Hordes of the Underdark expansion -- all those tasty high-level spells.

You could also install it through wine. Basically runs just as smoothly as the native install and it's somewhat less of a hassle. Though the native install isn't what you could call difficult, either.

I ran it on WINE, it worked almost flawlessly once I had it set up. Occasionally it won't go past the initial splash screen - I might have to start it once or twice, but once it's going, it keeps going.
I now have it going through Crossover - it works like a dream.
Havent had time to install HotU or Shadows of Undrentide yet on Linux, can't comment on them.
Still my fave game :)

I'm curious about this game also :)
I have wolfenstein on my laptop and I'd like to give this a whirl. Which version do I go getting??? I see there is NWN 1 & 2 diamond and gold editions. Any advice?
I'm running this on an ATI X1150. I know I'd meet the minimum requirements so I'm ready to give this a go :)

Neverwinter nights 1 diamond edition is great. I paid $20 ($15+shipping), and it includes: original and 2 expansion packs, plus custom packs(kingmaker). So you'll get lots of game hours from it.
Havn't played on linux, but works great on winxp.
I'd get the first one first. It should be cheaper and better chance of it running properly on laptop.
I don't have a gaming computer but am able to play with 1680*1050 resolution and most video settings to max, since game was released in 2002.

Is it easy setting it up on linux?

I havn't set up in linux, but it should be possible since they support linux.

I dualboot with windowsxp, so it's easier for me to do gaming on winxp.

I dual boot with W7 and I've had zero luck getting Wolfenstein to work on that end. My video card seems to work fine on Linux so I may try installing it with it.
I am getting XP Pro recovery disks any day so a partition with XP Pro might be what I will do. I was planning on hanging on to the W7 RC I have b/c I don't feel like reinstalling at the moment. I will if I have to though.

I recently felt like playing nwn and installed my Platinum edition on Ubuntu. I had to jump a couple of hoops to get it up to date, but it works fine now.

Great game but dated. I dont get to play games often anymore, so when i do, i like it to be at least Savage quality or better on the eyes. ^^

I have played this game two or three times from the beginning to the end (with both expansions). The Hordes of Underdark expansion has a very nice plot and dialogues.

There is an easy script to install the game and download the updates for the native Linux version; it was somewhere in the Games and Leisure forum for a while and I think it's still there. Last time I installed it was probably six months ago; works great, runs smooth and is still one of the best RPGs out there. In my humble opinion, of course. ;)

This thread got me jonesing for some NWN. Enemy AI seems smarter and companion AI seems dumber than I remember.

It is on purpose I believe. It's best if you pause after each move and issue specific orders.

One issue is the number of mobs... as soon as I passed the guards in the Peninsula, I was jumped by at least seven. But what really bothers me is the companion AI. Companions and summoned creatures will charge off looking for trouble, long before the trouble has spotted us. Combined with the mob spawns, this quickly becomes frustrating.

You can change their tactics by talking to them. If it doesn't work there are always cheats to make the game easier :) I used them with the expansions cause I just wanted to play for the scenario.

Okay guys. I need a little guidance here. I don't think I have enough or just barely enough room to install this game. I read that it will take 4.6 gb of HDD space. Before the game I was being minimalist with things and made three partitions for my Linux OS. They all are pretty small as I didn't think I'd be installing anything huge like this!
Disk /dev/sda: 80.0 GB, 80026361856 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 9729 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x0004506a
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 * 1 2611 20972826 7 HPFS/NTFS
Partition 1 does not end on cylinder boundary.
/dev/sda2 2612 3526 7349737+ 83 Linux
/dev/sda3 3527 4574 8418060 5 Extended
/dev/sda4 4575 5880 10490445 7 HPFS/NTFS
/dev/sda5 3527 4441 7349706 83 Linux
/dev/sda6 4442 4574 1068291 82 Linux swap / Solaris
Don't know if you can tell but I have a separate / and /home part. Now that the game comes into the picture would it be relative safe to expand that partition with gparted? They both have 6.9gb of total space each. The / part has 2.6gb of available space left and /home has 5.5gb of space available.
Any suggestions? Sure hate to reinstall!

The peninsula is usually the first place I go to, and is one of the more difficult parts of the game. By the time you beat the peninsula you're character will be leveled up enough to make it easier to fight the other places.
I agree with the mobs attacking lots at first. Take shelter behind soldiers if needed (but if they kill them you don't get XP).
Expect lots of saving/loading in that area. Just wait until you get in jail. :)

Your partition map is a bit messed up: your extended partition is sda3 and it contains sda5 and sda6 as logical partitions. But sda4 is another primary partition and it is 'behind' the extended partition. Point being, the remaining ~30GB on the drive is unusable. I don't think there's any way to fix this without deleting partitions 3-6. There's a few ways to fix this, but every one would involve deleting at least one partition. If you don't want to do that, you could probably get away with installing it on your existing /home partition.
snip
I think when I played back in the day I took the peninsula second to last, maybe that's why it seemed so different.
