Hi
I was thinking of using some light desktop(havent decided on one)
But i need the applications that i need
And i dont think that equivalent of an app like empathy which provides voip will be found that easily on some desktop like awesome
So i will have to download the packages for gnome
Will that cause the system to run heavier?

Awesome is a window manager not a desktop. So if you want a light desktop try LXDE (http://www.lxde.org/)

It's in the repo's

It will result in slightly larger memory footprint, but if you are already using any GTK applications the difference isn't really that big unless you are seriously low on RAM.

And if you are low on RAM, the most important thing is to stick to apps from one desktop environment, so when you need apps that have lots of DE dependencies stick to apps either from Gnome or KDE but not both and things should stay tolerable.
