I have ubuntu 8.04 running....can I upgrade it to kubuntu 9.04 without having to do a fresh install? Basically, I want to keep my current programs and files.....is that possible without taking a backup?

H, you should be able to do a network upgrade and keep all your data, but you will need to upgrade to 8.10 first as you can not skip in between releases (Long term releases can upgrade straight to next LTS)

If you want to switch to kubuntu then once you upgrade then install kubuntu-desktop. However I'm a little confused because you said that you wanted to keep all of your same programs. You can use your Gnome(ubuntu) programs in Kubuntu(KDE) but unless you really want to use KDE as your desktop environment I would just stay with Ubuntu (Gnome).

I use KDE (Kubuntu) but I also use mostly KDE programs. I love KDE but you can use whatever you prefer.
