I foolishly interupted an upgrade from 8.04 to 9.04 and incapacitated my GF's machine.
I was advised to reinstall 9.04 from CD.
I am nervous though of the risk of losing files already on the system.
I planned to back them up over the LAN, but using a "from CD" temporary install, I cannot seem to get access to the two users folders over the LAN using Samba (I did smbpasswd -a and -e and set up a share in Samba but I am being refused access from a windows machine on the LAN.)

before I go ahead and install 9.04, can someone tell me what I have to read to be sure of protecting the existing data. I have read about partitioning and it still baffles me (and I was a Comp Sci major 25 years ago.)

How when say Manually setting the partition sizes, do I ensure that the existing data is safely tucked away?

You have to copy the files somewhere safe before installing. Be warned, that all data will be lost on partitions you format.
