View Full Version : [ubuntu] How to troubleshoot: "Display Server has been shutdown 6 times in 90 seconds"

Have been running 9.04 on a Thinkpad X61 since June with no issues, but today began to encounter a situation where the display goes dark, and can't seem to recover.

I eventually get an error message that says: "Display Server has been shutdown 6 times in 90 seconds." If I give it ctrl+alt+delete, I get the Ubuntu shutdown sequence and the system restarts entirely. I've had this happen at twice today.

I've added no new hardware since yesterday. The only change is I upgraded VirtualBox to latest PUEL release 3.0.8 today.

How do I troubleshoot this?

* I have an external Samsung wide screen display and a docking station. The screens are not mirrored.
* I'm running: 2.6.30-020630-generic (done in June)
* Also have made mods to X per this thread re: Intel graphics http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1130582 (also done in June)
