Does anyone have any plans to have parties for the launch of Karmic later this month? I have been considering doing something rather cheap at my college, but I'm curious if anyone has anything already going on. :)

Release parties are Windows infections, aren't they? :)

Windows 7 parties are soon to be followed by Windows 7 Failure to Commit to Contractual Obligation Litigation, though. A lot of people signed up simply to get the free copy of Windows 7 without realization that selection made them bound legally to actually host said parties. ;-)

I've been meaning to go to a launch party for the past 3 releases or so. I'm actually going to do it this time! Yay! :guitar:

For how long Canonical has been promoting those "parties"? I thought that was a Microsoft idea. A really bad one, btw.

I simply don't get it. I can relate with an Installfest (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Installfest), but that doesn't look like a party. A party usually has good food, lots of beer, loud music and pretty women. But a party for a new OS release sounds like really boring and lame.

Dude 1: "Hey, let's get some beer and go talk to those crazy chicks over there."
Dude 2: "Oh no, I want to see the new ext4 file system in action".

Seriously, I can't imagine myself asking anyone to come to a party like that. Perhaps I would invite a couple of friends for a Pizza and then suggest testing the new OS together, if they really like Ubuntu and the mood is favorable. But making the OS release the central subject of a party and the main attraction, is kind of weird.

Has anyone been on one of those? How is it like?

EDIT: this one (http://blog.didrocks.fr/index.php/post/Ubuntu-Party-Paris:-more-than-4-000-visitors!) makes a lot of sense to me. But isn't a party, is a huge event, like a symposium. It doesn't look like what Microsoft was promoting with the Windows 7 Party videos.

I've been to plenty of wild parties at Sixth Form (College) and University, and I can tell you that these days, most of the time I'd rather sit and look at the ext4 filesystem. Worrying isn't it?

I'm having a Karmic lunch party.

Really, I intend to eat lunch while installing Karmic on my machines, and include a balloon in the festivities. I'll attend, and so will my cats. Though they don't much care about ext4 over ext3 or about integration of Ubuntu One, they will, however, likely enjoy the ham.

:lolflag:

I have to admit that was thinking about the old days of the University, when I wrote the previous post. I can't even believe I was able to party all night and attend a class at 8:00 am. Nowadays, I prefer to stay at home tinkering with Ubuntu :)
