I have compiz 1:0.8.2-0ubuntu8.1 installed on a LinuxMint System and the cube is rotating..(with a ATI Radeon 3200 HD Graphic Card
and ATI/AMD proprietary graphics driver, installed through Envy.)

How can I disable the cube caps to look inside to see the GEARs running?

CCSM -Desktop cube-Appearance-Transparent Cube.
If you have the wallpaper plugin enabled the sides will also be transparent,
if not, only the top and bottom will be transparent.

The only way I can find to view inside is by setting the cube transparency which is in ccsm >Desktop Cube (NOT Cube Rotation)>Transparent Cube

Thanks for the response onyxwolf and stinkeye...Yes it works...I set the Transparency to 60,000 to 70,000 :)
