After doing some flagged upgrades (from the update manager) my sound has become erratic. Sometimes it works. Other times it doesn't. If I play one video in VLC and then exit and try to play another there's no sound, but if I use dragon player it plays. Nothing else plays sound. I see the video, but no sound. This unit has been used for a long time and it has played sound without much of an issue since initially installing and configuring.
I then did some upgrades on a second linux box in the same manner and now sound is messed up on that one too. One has an amd chipset (00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc SBx00 Azalia (Intel HDA)) and the other has an nvidia chipset.
If I choose to log out, that is to just log out of the session I hear the shutdown sound. If I choose to log back in I have sound again until the above described circumstances occur.
I use this machine to watch Hulu. I use it to play downloaded videos through VLC and through XBMC. Further I use it to play music through Exaile and through Amarok 1.4, and through Last.fm. I also loaded Suns Virtualbox and have XP installed in it and I play Netflix through that. This problem occurs regardless of whether I have the Sun Virtualbox loaded or not.
Anyone have ideas?
