Hi,
I just upgraded to Kubuntu 9.10 and am loving so far. Only thing I hate is the enormous black thing that appears whenever I change desktops. It obscures the desktop for about one second each time I switch. Does anybody know how I can rid of it?

Yes, thank you, that's the one. It responds to the themes so it's black if you choose "oxygen". I think maybe the KDE mailing lists themselves will be the place to look.

System Settings -> Window Behavior -> Under "Window Switching", uncheck "Popup desktop name on desktop switch".

Ok! I have got rid of it! Here's how:
System Settings -> Window Behavior -> (Window Behavior -> Focus) -> uncheck "Popup desktop name on desktop switch".
Mine was already unchecked so I checked and unchecked it and now it's gone:
