This deceased jackalope is mounted behind the bar in Dromoland Castle, Ireland.

I uesd to live in the area and I've watched the barmen spoofing tourists (usually Americans) and the odd gullible native that jackalopes are real creatures and that this particular one was caught on the grounds...

Apologies if this has been posted previously.

A few years back I saw something on the Discovery Channel about jackalopes. Apparently there is some disease that desert hares contract that causes bony growths to form on their face and head. These growths can, at a quick glance, look like antlers. So the real-world jackalope does sort of exist, provided you accept diseased hares with bony growths on their faces into the category.

Failing that there's a Canadian industrial/rock band called Jakalope ("Jackalope" without the "c"). They are certainly real, and have two albums so far:

As we (sometimes) say over here, 'Well, ride me sideways!'.

Diseased hares with bony growths on their faces as jackalopes is totally, categorically acceptable to me. I'm off to Discovery Channel right now...

A quick google hunt came up with this picture of the disease-caused jackalope:

It's clearly different from the traditional jackalope, but if you saw that briefly out of the corner of your eye you might mistake it for the "real" thing.

I'm from Texas and wild Jackalope are everywhere. It's nothing to see them while driving through the countryside, especially right before the sun comes up.

The horns fall off right before cold Winter sets in. New horns start growing in again in the spring.

Wanna see real Jackalopes, come to Texas.

They run wild here in Idaho.
They really don't bother anyone.
You get used to them.

See there?

Cute little critters, aren't they?
