Hi guys, I am going to try ubuntu, I used it a few months ago going to try again. Should I install by cd or usb, and should I use 9.04 or 8.04??

CD or USB, does not matter. CD is probably a bit easier.

imo: do 8.04, or wait 27 days for 9.10 to come out and do a fresh install of that.

a direct download of 9.10 on/near release day will be slow as molasses.

a .torrent download on/near release day will be blazing fast.

i'd go with downloading 9.10 via torrent on release day, and installing that. you can install it while the kids are knocking on your door for Halloween! and then after it is installed, give the LiveCD to whichever kid is dressed up as Einstein or some other nerdy thing. :D

Easiest way would be to clean install.

In fact that's the only way I'd recommend.

I recommend you wait and install 9.10 when it's come out.

upgrade options are two:

1: from LTS to LTS. you will be able to go from 8.04 directly to 10.04.
2: 6 month release to 6 month release. 8.04 -> 8.10 -> 9.04 -> 9.10. i'd bet money that somewhere along that upgrade path, something will break.

9.04 -> 9.10 is much less likely to break, but 9.10 is going to come with some new stuff that will only be applied if you do a fresh install.

if you are eager, i'd suggest going ahead and installing 9.04 now and playing around... then, at the end of the month, do a fresh install of 9.10 while keeping your /home intact.

(back up your /home folder from 9.04, do a completely fresh install of 9.10, restore your home folder... like magic, all your firefox bookmarks, your pidgin settings, your panel setup, etc, will be restored the way they where in 9.04)
