I'm trying to decide what Nas drive to buy/build, I'm after some ideas :)

Show us your nas drives/setups :-)

If you're on a budget, nexenta/OpenSolaris. ZFS is your friend. You can use a combination of drives, old or new.

its always best to standardise. I've been doing enterprise NAS for so long now, I am probably not the best resource anymore to tell you what kind of SATA drives to get, but I do know that whatever you get, I would throw ZFS across them.

I was thinking about FreeNas, how good is the software raid included?

The softRAID of freeNAS is fine. What I like about ZFS is the ability to have snapshot reserves, which is a form of online backup. VERY nice feature. last time I used freeNAS, it couldn't do this. Maybe it can now.

EDIT: Apparently the very latest version of FreeNAS supports ZFS. So sounds like FreeNAS might be quite a bit better now than it was.

I've two servers running FreeNAS, its a great OS. I've had no problem with software raid, my main server has 320^2Gb drives in RAID0, my backup server having 320^3Gb drives in RAID5. FreeNAS is a quick little OS, packed full of features, easy to configure, and will run on very little hardware :D

I really want a Drobos -- too bad however the device doesn't have a NIC card.
