Hello and ete-sen!
In the moment I am working for the biggest Ghanaian newspaper Daily Graphic (http://www.graphicghana.com/) as an intern. As the interns are relatively free in choosing their stories, I would like to write a feature article promoting the idea of FOSS and especially ubuntu as African OS. The market for PCs is growing fast in Ghana and Microsoft is already here with its promotion. In the moment it looks like they will also get a monopoly here.
I have been using ubuntu myself since spring this year and one of the most inspiring parts is the community. That's why I wondered if it was possible to write and develop such an article somehow together in the community in this forum. Don't get me wrong, I do not want you to do my work and I earn the credits. In contrast I would like to give the readers an idea of what this community means by showing them that its members from all over the world can produce such an article together.
I did a brainstorming about the content and that is what came out so far:
Begin: How does your PC work and how is the OS involved in it?
Normally you would use Windows. What is Windows and Microsoft, what other popular products do they offer and what are the main disadvantages (price, closed software, viruses, etc.)?
Then Linux and the idea of FOSS is proposed as an alternative and its history and philosophy are presented.
Ubuntu is an example as an African distribution, so it is presented with a focus on its advantages, but also it's existing problems.
Some famous examples of companies, institutions or organizations are presented. I only know the city of Munich and the French National Assembly as their administrations switched to some Linux distributions. But also it should be mentioned that many famous and important internet services are provided on servers using Linux.
At the there should be some Ghanaian or at least West African examples, who use successfully use Linux and FOSS.
That's my proposed outline. I would be really glad if somebody could comment my idea. If there are interested people, I will propose a first blueprint of the article by the begin of next week which hopefully includes some ideas of the community. The article should be published during the next week, as I will leave the Graphic after it. So you might see a result by the end of the upcoming week.
