I do a lot of work with graphics as a hobby, while my wife likes to just surf the net. I find it easier to work in higher resolutions, but she's more comfortable with 1024 x 768. Is there a way to set the X server so that we both get what we want in our separate sessions?

To set resolutions I use the Nvidia X Server Settings.

Couldn't you just change the screen resolution in System->Preferences->Screen Resolution.

That way it should be specific to the user.

I don't think you can change any video settings through Ubuntu with Nvidia drivers. Everything has to be done through Nvidia's controls. Since I do not use Nvidia anymore, I'm not sure how to make changes user specific. Anyone else?

That's exactly it, dvlchd3. I go to Display under Preferences and it redirects me to the nvidia interface. I was hoping maybe there was something I could do through the terminal, or through editing a config file somewhere.

Is it the actual resolution she dislikes or the text size? You can adjust the size of both the icons and the system text to whatever she likes and still keep the sharpness.
