Well, it's still going to be September for quite a few hours (I'm only about two time zones ahead of the date line... so everything happens late for me!) but I thought I'd get in on this action early anyway.

To answer your first question, I did.

To answer your second question, unfortunately, I forgot to save what I was working on in GIMP as an .xcf, so I lost the layer I used to create the stripes.

Oooo you are good! That's exactly it.
Greenlife Emerald has alot more features compared to the normal viewer.

It's an online world, most use it for chatting, but there's also alot of avatar customization, 3D building (secondlife has it's own 3D building engine type of thing). There's in-world games. Everything in the world is made by it's users. It's more like a mini-platform than a 3D chat really. It's free, feel free to try it. http://www.secondlife.com

Fairly simple, since I'll probably be reinstalling sometime soon. I may mess about adding some widgets at some point, but I won't bother with writing a conky for this one since it'll be gone in no time :P

Sorry about the image quality being low, I forgot to set the quality and couldn't be bothered to fix it once it'd been uploaded because I'm so lazy.

I can already tell one thing is wrong with that theme just by looking at that second screenshot. The creator of the theme either didn't change the color of highlighted text or he didn't choose the correct color, as it clashes with the orange highlight color.

Well, i can't blame the theme creator, cause i changed it to make the "indicator applet" and the menu text the same color as the rest of the panel...

Using the 'wild mint' theme with the aurora gtk. Nabbed those off my linux mint install on a different computer. I love how it's a dark theme, yet you can still read everything clearly (i.e. audacity).

A friend of mine sent me the wallpaper. I don't remember if he did it himself or not, but it was made using a fractal plugin in photoshop. Wish gimp had a fractal plugin that worked like that.

Icon theme is 'royal blue' from gnome-look.org, but I tweaked it quite a bit. several of the icons give that away.

oh, and i use winamp under wine to play adx files. full version didn't work, but the lite version is perfect.

Neat conky! Can you indulge my laziness and post the config?
Sure.

rings.lua (modified from ali's script)

--[[
Ring Meters by londonali1010 (2009)

This script draws percentage meters as rings. It is fully customisable; all options are described in the script.

IMPORTANT: if you are using the 'cpu' function, it will cause a segmentation fault if it tries to draw a ring straight away. The if statement on line 129 uses a delay to make sure that this doesn't happen. It calculates the length of the delay by the number of updates since Conky started. Generally, a value of 5s is long enough, so if you update Conky every 1s, use update_num>5 in that if statement (the default). If you only update Conky every 2s, you should change it to update_num>3; conversely if you update Conky every 0.5s, you should use update_num>10. ALSO, if you change your Conky, is it best to use "killall conky; conky" to update it, otherwise the update_num will not be reset and you will get an error.

To call this script in Conky, use the following (assuming that you save this script to ~/scripts/rings.lua):
lua_load ~/scripts/rings.lua
lua_draw_hook_pre ring_stats

Changelog:
+ v1.1 -- Added options for the starting angle of the rings, and added the "max" variable, to allow for variables that output a numerical value rather than a percentage (29.09.2009)
+ v1.0 -- Original release (28.09.2009)

It is? Compiz + emerald uses about 20mb of RAM all up. All 2D graphic tasks seem to improve under compiz (X11 video is actually watchable). Compiz itself is extremely responsive.

I've got 512mb of RAM, a radeon 9550 (OSS driver) and an Athlon 2800+. Chalk it up to results may vary.

Not compared to some other compositing window managers. Consider the screenshot above, compiz is using 1% of that guy's cpu. While that may not be a lot, I use xcompmgr and it doesn't even show up in top.

Yes you save some ram using gnome's natural compositing engine but... you lose the effects and the difference is only around 20MB which is not much unless you are on a medievil machine!

Sarai the Geek
October 2nd, 2009, 08:59 PM
...it's 1%. How can that POSSIBLY matter to you? Have you ever been sitting there trying to, I don't know, render sixteen videos at once and gone "my god if I only had one more free percent of CPU I'd be able to do this!!!"

That's not the point. The point is that compared to a lot of window managers, it's not light. That was all I said.

That is indeed a true observation, but if you are able to run Gnome or KDE it does not hurt much to run Compiz as it only takes about another 20MB of ram or so... But yes if limited on ram then Compiz does make the environment heavier and should not be used.

I understand that. It is not a huge difference though really. But like I said if limited on hardware I would just enable the natural Gnome compositing engine which can be done inside gconf-editor under gnome section... Can select enable compositing which is faster compositing without effects loading against the cpu and ram, but im going to end this since this is desktop screenshot thread and not a thread about whether or not we should use compiz etc!

And a pillow isn't light compared to a balloon, but if I hear someone complaining that a pillow is heavy I'm gonna tell them it isn't at all.

Compiz is definitely on the low end of WM/DE weight. Of course there are lighter, but this claim that Compiz is "heavy" is far from the truth.

I'd like to say something on the compiz thing here too. Since xfce already supports compositing why use compiz? for the extra bling? For the shadows under the windows and menus and the transparencies it's just as good though.

I've been using Windows for a long time now. Long enough to know what sites to go to, and what sites not to go to. What to download and install, and what to not download and install.

I know my way around, and a virus scanner just adds extra bloat and slows down my system. I have no use for it. I'm a gamer, I need all the resources I can possibly have.

Technically, wouldn't the only piece you would need be xfwm4? Although on an Ubuntu system, I don't know if you could get it without all the rest. You wouldn't necessarily have to use anything but xfwm4 though.

Edit: I just checked. You can get it without pulling in all of the xfce desktop stuff. You can even replace metacity or kwin with it if you want.

Doesn't using compiz with it sort of defeat the point? I mean, it's supposed to be lightweight and fast, but compiz is pretty heavy...

Not compared to some other compositing window managers. Consider the screenshot above, compiz is using 1% of that guy's cpu. While that may not be a lot, I use xcompmgr and it doesn't even show up in top.

That's not the point. The point is that compared to a lot of window managers, it's not light. That was all I said.

You point seems to keep changing. First it's heavy, then it's heavy compared to 'other compositing WMs', then it's heavy compared to other WMs.

- Full screen zoom.
- Expo for workspace management.
- Window Rules to force window sizes/behaviour.
- Resize Info to help me resize windows specifically.
- Scale for improved window picking.
- Window previews to again improve window picking.
- Ring switcher to again improve window picking.
- Resize overlays to make window resizing smooth.
- More decorator button options.

It's well worth the 5mb jump in RAM usage (20mb - the 15mb xfwm would use) and the couple of bugs it introduces.

Arch indeed!

- Compiz Fusion for my WM
- Tint2 for the panel
- Conky for the other stuff
- PCManFM file manager

Other odds and ends are Compiz-Deskmenu for my root menu, gmrun for my alt+F2 run dialog (though it's Super+Space for me), Wicd for network.

Appearance-wise:

- GTK/Emerald is Conte Blue, my creation
- Wall from DeviantArt

It's an alternate panel. I like it because it's minimalistic but includes a tray, plus it's more customizable than anything I've seen. It took some getting used to, having a tray just on one side, but now I can't imagine having the full thing.

No apologies necessary, Tipped! I went back to make sure I hadn't gone crazy. It wouldn't be the first time I'd totally missed something. :lolflag:

Siiiiigh. Okay, here's the screen again. But with a warning. Now anyone browsing at work won't have to worry.

WARNING, BOOBIES. (http://imgur.com/TXx2c.png)

Same info.

The gal in that wallpaper looks like she was inspired by one of the characters from Disney's "Atlantis: The Lost Empire".

EDIT: Might as well show the new setup...

I've switched to Pink/Black this month on my Gnome installation. Once again, showing off some applets I wrote for the notify system.

And the second one is currently what Xmonad looks like windows-less for the time being ...
After seeing some stuff around here though, I may change my mind on that look.

Mine on the new Karmic desktop. (I'll post my Windows Server screenshot when I can boot into it.)

Wallpaper is this (http://interfacelift.com/wallpaper_beta/details/2000/sacramento_tower_bridge_passing.html), GTK and Metacity are still the defaults. The font has been changed to Helvetica Nueue.

So far I like Karmic's default GTK and Metacity theme - my only complaint is that the panels should be white on dark, judging by the monochrome tray icons.

This is my first October screen shot. The wallpaper is based on this wallpaper (http://tylertut.deviantart.com/art/Autumn-Rainbow-137370716). It's an interesting idea, but I didn't like the execution, so I made my own version. I can upload it if anyone wants it.

I don't bother modding my KDE4.3, unless you count switching to one of the included plasma themes a mod. It looks better than anything already :) Although a windows 7-ish panel would be nice.
