View Full Version : [SOLVED] Is Ubuntu desktop as advanced as Hildon to enable different wallpapers?

I was reading about the Nokia N900, which runs a Debian-based OS with a Hildon desktop. The following quote caught my attention because I want to have different backgrounds (wallpapers) on my Jaunty desktop.

The N900 now has four separate home screens / desktops between which you can quickly "scroll" just by swiping your finger from left to right or vice versa. Each desktop can have a different wallpaper (or a set of wallpapers can be set for all screens at once - for instance, you can create a long panorama, divide it into four pictures and assign them to all home screens so that the whole panorama smoothly scrolls as you switch from one home screen to another) and totally different content. How can I enable different backgrounds for each of my 4 desktops in Jaunty? (Obviously, I'm not looking for touch screen functionality on my desktop -- but I would like the panorama effect on a desktop cube, for example.)

EDIT: and I don't want to sacrifice my desktop icons. See https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=444320

I don't think it's possible without patching Nautilus. Also, it seems the old patches no longer work.

My solution was to switch to KDE. With KDE 4.3.2 out, KDE is an incredible desktop. No going back to gnome for me!
