Hi all,

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 x86-64 (I just love it, since 7.10!) and I will be getting a new laptop soon. I was wondering if it was possible for me to copy my entire desktop 9.04 filesystem over to my new laptop, with all the installed softwares intact. I have about 9GB worth software in my desktop and it would be difficult to do the same things over again on my laptop. I know it's possible to backup and restore my Ubuntu partition, but is it possible to backup from my desktop and restore on my laptop? There will definitely be differences in the hardware between the 2 computers, but what if I used the same 9.04 x86-64 on both? Any help will be great! :)

You may want to research/try aptonCD to see if it suits your needs. I have used it to transfer apps. I used it to rebuild my machine (same ubuntu version and same hardware specs). I don't know how much tweaking you'll need to do as you are transferring to a different hardware.

Good luck.

You can create an installable LiveCD of the system you are using.

9GB is too big for a cd / dvd (obviously) so you might need to get rid of some things.

Clone the entire HDD. Never used it so can't re\lly advise on this one.
