Below is an informal business plan, and I would like to know what you think (is it do-able?).

A business like GM, for example (but most likely smaller upstarts), would contact us with a research project idea for us to do. For example, in most cars the windshield, when hit with an object with enough force, will cause it to form many cracks along its surface. The windshield will hold together, but it will still become opaque. GM would contact us, saying they would like us to create a windshield that will crack, but only in the immediate area of the impact. They would write up a list of requirements for this project, as well as a timeline-for-completion and budget. We (“we” being the business) would bring together a team of our employees who are best suited for a project like this, give them a copy of the requirements from GM, and the resources required for them to finish this in the time alloted. Upon completion, we will obtain a patent in GM's name, as well as any other pertinent documents for the project, and hand it over to GM who would then pay us the budget set aside earlier as well as the fee for our services. GM would (theoretically) implement it in their next line of cars for the safety of their costumers.

It is a bit rough but you may research companies that have been successful, the only one I can think of that may be relevant for you is:

CH2M HILL

You may want to research what has worked for them:

You may want to pick up the book:

Might it not be more profitable to simply engage in the research independently, get the required patents etc and then sell/license your work from there?
